Ek din hansaaye ek din rulaaye

“Kismat” (1943) has the distinction of being India’s most successful movie at the box office (it ran for three years at one movie hall) before its record was broken by “Sholay” (1975) (it ran for five years in one movie hall). “Kismat” (1943) really must have caught the imagination of the public at that time. And its music definitely played a big role in bringing movie watchers to the movie halls.
Several songs of “Kismat” (1943) went on to become classics. I have discussed as many as four songs from this movie. Here is another song.
This song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki and Arun Kumar, who I assume is same as Arun Kumar Mukherjee. Pradeep is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anil Biswas.
The song is picturised on Mumtaz Shanti (lip syncing in Amirbai Karnataki’s voice) and a bearded Saadhu whom I am unable to identify. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify him.
Pradeep’s lyrics are philosophical in nature and it is nice experience to listen to the song being rendered in the voices of Amirbai Karnataki and Arun Kumar.

Lyrics
ham aisi qismat ko kyaa karen
haay
haay
ke jo ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
qismat hamaari
hamin ko sataaye
haay
ke jo ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
duniyaa mein pehle-pehle jab wo aayi
qismat jo aayi
to phoolon ke sang-sang
kaante bhi laayi
ham sab ke aangan mein
aise bichhaaye haay
ke jo ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
rone kaa din hai
main gaati hoon gaanaa
dukh bhoolne kaa
hai ye ek bahaanaa
kehti hoon main
dil ke tukdon se haay
baithhe rahoon
apnaa dukhdaa chhupaaye
baithhe rahoon
apnaa dukhdaa chhupaaye
duniyaa ki reet bhi kaisi hai
haay
ke jo ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
aaa aaa
jo kuchh bhi aataa hai
aane de bande
jo kuchh bhi aataa hai
aane de bande
jo kuchh bhi jaataa hai
jaane de bande
jo kuchh bhi aataa hai
aane de bande
duniyaa mein sukh-dukh ke
do din hain
haay
ke jo ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
ek din hansaaye
ek din rulaaye
ek din
hansaaye ek din rulaaye

Atul ji,
The bearded sadhu seems to be Arunkumar mukherjee himself. He is also part of the cast in the film.
Some trivias about Kismat:
1) The title Kismat seems to be quite popular with producers. In all 7 films with title Kismat were produced-1932,43,56,68,80,95 and 2004.
Titles having a word Kismat in them were 12 so far.
2) Kismat-1943 was the biggest earner in those days, grossing 10 million rupees;which,by today’s standards would be 800 million rupees.
3) The longest running record of Kismat was broken by Sholay and this record was broken by Dilwale dulhaniya ley jayenge (more than 7 years in one theatre in Mumbai ! ).
