Music has always been an enchanting appeal for me, since my childhood. Having grown up on a listening diet of radio programs on AIR and Radio Ceylon, the music of Hindi films has been the best charm for me. In the eighties, fresh out of college, and into my first job, the earnings meant that now I could buy music that I wanted to listen. Cassette tapes were the popular media in those days, and making copies of music from records was a rampant cottage industry.

“Kaanch Aur Heera” (1972) was a B grade movie produced by Sudarshan Chitra and directed by Charandas Shokh. The makers of this movie must have been great believers in winning lottery or stock market riches, seeing that they had staked the future of their movie on names like Pankaj and Shaheen. Yes, they were the lead actors in this movie. Other in the cast were Rajan Haksar, Kamal Kapoor, Manmohan etc.

“Raahgeer” (1969), also spelt “Rahgir” is a forgotten movie even though it is a “recent” movie by the standads of this blog. This movie was a Geetanjali Chitradeep production and it was directed by Tarun Majumdar. This movie had Biswjeet, Nirupa Roy, Asit sen,Sandhya Roy,Basantha/vasantha Chowdhury,Shashikala, Padma Chauhan,Anwar Hussain, Pahari Sanyal, Master Prasenjit,Ifthekar, Kanhaiyyalal etc in it.

Pankaj Mullick, the name that shines in the Bengali music and culture as one of the brightest stars. Most of us are familiar with Pankaj Babu as being an accomplished composer and singer. But, much more than that, he was an innovator par excellence. Not many are familiar with the fact that this gifted musician, through his experimentation with providing music to films, originated the concept of background music in Indian cinema, to accentuate the emotions, the action and the pace of the scenes on screen.
