Greetings all friends and readers, for a wonderful and colorful festival of Holi today.

The title of this song says very aptly, ‘Holi Phir Se Aa Gayee Re’. It is once again, that time of the year – the weather is really starting to get warm in the sub continent. The cold winds from the north have given way to pleasant breezes of spring, and the time duration between the sunrise and the sunset is getting longer and longer. The colors of spring are just past their peak in the gardens, and today is the last day of the month of ‘Phalgun’ as per the Hindu calendar. Which means it is going to be a full moon tonight, and tomorrow starts the month of ‘Chaitra’.

On the occasion of Holi today, which is the fourth Holi for this blog, here is a Holi song from “Aakhir Kyon” (1985). The time from 1980s onwards was when my period of blackout from Hindi movies had begun, so it comes as no surprise that I am not much familiar with the music of those days. Personally I came across this Holi song just now and I found it quite a hummable and danceable song.

During my earlier stage of baptism to Hindi film songs of the golden era, whenever I came across some new songs I liked, I would want to know the name of the film, singers and themusic directors ( in that order) of the concerned songs. I never enquired about who wrote these likeable songs. One song that made me to know the name of the lyricist was “main zindagi ka saath nibhaata chala gaya” from HUM DONO(1961). This song virtually introduced me to a great Urdu poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi. I feel shy to reveal here that though I liked those iconic songs of PYAASA (1957) but that did not trigger my brain to enquire as to who wrote those melancholic and the soul searching songs. As I came to know later, those songs were written by Sahir Ludhianvi.

Its starcast had Shashi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, David Abraham, Lalita Pawar, K. N. Singh, Om Prakash, Tiwari, Bhagwan, Sunder, Manmohan Krishna, Leela Misra, Randhir, Mukri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it. Now we know why the movie was obscure despite being a recent movie :).

Life is often likened to a journey in Hindi movie songs. This is one comparison that I find quite appropriate. In fact, many other activities during our lifetimes can also be likened to a journey. For instance, this blog is indeed much like a journey. I have often described it as a musical bandwagon that is going on and on, adding fellow passengers on the way and passing milestones after milestones.

One of the remembrances of my childhood days of early 50s was a song ‘kuchh yaad rahe to sun kar jaa’ which my mother used to sing quite often. It would not be an exaggeration to say that I grew up with this song. Those days, I did not remember the beginning line of this song but one line from this song – ‘tu haan kar jaa yaa naa kar jaa’ remained embedded in my mind. I had no inkling at that time that it was a filmy song.
