When I saw the lyrics of this song sent by Prakashchandra, who mentioned it as a rare melodious duet, I wondered what was this rare song. When I played this song, I immediately recognised this song as one that I had heard in the past without being aware of its details.
Thanks to the details provided by Prakashchandra, now I know that this song was from an obscure movie called “Shayad”(1979). This song is sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised as a romantic song on Vijayendra Ghatge and Neeta Mehta. Vithal Bhai Patel is the lyricist and music is composed by Manas Mukherji.
It is interesting to note that apart from the singers who are household names, others involved in the song need to be introduced. The music director Manas Mukherji is the father of present day singers Shan and Sagarika. Vithal Bhai Patel, who had the same name as a leading politician of pre independence India (brother of Sardar Patel), was one of lyricists who mostly remained on the fringes. He is most well known for his song “Jhooth Bole Kawwa kaate “(Bobby) for which he received Filmfare nomination of best lyricist in 1973, though he lost out to Gulshan Baawra for the song Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi (Zanjeer). Vithal Bhai Patel wrote songs sporadically but most of his songs are not all that well known. This song in fact is the first song of Vithal Bhai Patel in the blog. In fact this song is the first song of Manas Mukherji too in the blog.
Coming to the actors on whom this song is picturised, Vijayendra Ghatge I thought had all the ingredients of becoming a lead hero of 1980s. In fact, one leading Hindi magazine (Dharmayug- now defunct) had in 1977 listed a few names who they felt would make it big as the new great hero. In that write up they had included the names of Mithun Chakraborty, Vijayendra Ghatge and a few other names that I do not remember now. Much to my chagrin, Mithun Chakraborty actually made it big and Vijayengra Ghatge, despite having better looks, physique etc failed to become anything but an also ran. Later on, when TV serials on Doordarshan came up, he played an important role in the mega tele seial “Buniyaad”. But that was small consolation for an actor who promised so much and delivered so little.
As for Neeta Mehta, I too know little about her. I request our knowledgeable readers to help tell us about her wherabouts etc.
The song is a nice song but Manna Dey was not as fashionable a name as Kishore Kumar or Rafi, so this song did not become too popular. With time it became forgotten. Now, with the passage of time, it sounds like a gem that this song actually is.
Looking at the fate of the majority of artists involved in this song, one realises that luck plays a huge role in Hindi movie industry. all the talent and ability is nothing if one does not have luck going in his/her favour.
Here is this nice forgotten song from a forgotten movie, even if the movie is just over three decades old.

Shaayad is a lover story set against the hospital back-drop. Euthenasia (Mercy-killing) is dramatically depicted in the film. The story revolves round the hippocretic oath which reads I shall not give poison to a patient even if asked to do so. . A young surgeon is transferred to his Alma Mater. One of his patients is the husband of the woman he had loved and lost. A tremendous tragedy strikes. Two hundred victims of illict alcohol poisioning come to the hospital. In the desperate effort to save their lives, doctors, nurses, medical students and some patients join hands. . The surgeon loved her in his college days but could not marry because her mother (Nadira) was a woman with dubious past. She too had realized that the ambitious medical student would find it hard to live with a woman who had such a social stigma attached to her. . The poet-a rebel, married her and they were happy together. The poet is a sensouous person and he can not bear with the shattering pain of cancer. He requests the surgeon to terminate his life. He urges in favour of mercy killing. Doctors dilemma begins. The patient dies and postmortem revels poison. The scene shifts to court. The surgeon is prime suspect. The wife too could have done it.

Neeta Mehta, is she not the actress who had a hit “jai Santoshi Maata”. Whether she is the same or not, but i have seen her in Subhash Ghai’s “Hero” as Sanjeev Kumar’s wife. I too recognised this song “Mausam aayega jaayega’ as continuing on “pyaar sadaa muskaayega”. Heard it a lot on radio, might have seen it too on T.V. but i might be confusing this song with the car song from “Bulandi” featuring Danny and Kim.

“Kaho Kahan Chale Jahan tum le chalo phir bhi manzil kahan” is the song you are talking about, nahmji. WOnder if its been put up yet or is it “Oh my god, yeh nahi tha?”

You got it right, “kaho kahan chalen” is the song. And no songs from ‘Bulandi’ are posted yet.
And i like PVC’s choice of songs, they are like sit up and take notice , be it qawwali from “Aandhi” or this “Dhanno ki aankhon mien”. I dont know why but i thought that song was on Naseeruddin Shah. Or again is that ‘Sunaina sunaina” song again. Dont mind me i can just travel from one song to another like this.

Neeta Mehta appeared in Swarg se sundar in a special appearance:in a Lady Doctor`s role who tests jayaprada or padmini kolhapure and tell them she is unable to carry a child or something like that. It`s a blink `n miss appearance role for NEETA MEHTA

Aurat Aurat Aurat is a rekha movie directed by south director k.vishwanath and had starcast of rakesh roshan,sadashivaprapurkar,sriram lagoo.
In this movie rekha marries her lover rakesh roshan`s old father ram lagoo and neeta mehta was there in a role of LADY HARIKATHA TELLER in a temple.(In this movie villain Sadashiv a. is after rekha)This is a movie which was long in the making.
In Raam ki ganga neeta mehta played a role of prostitute against om puri and that movie had good music and came in the wake of Ram teri ganga maili.
As far as Jeene nahin doonga and naukar biwika neeta mehta was a permanent feature in Nishi kohli produced movies directed by raj kumar kohli

There is one more good song in this film “khushboo boon main phool nahin hoon jo murjhaaungaa” by Rafi. Shaan sang this song in a show on “Sa re ga ma ” on Zee T.V.

What you have said about the need to have LUCK on your side to succeed is true.
Vijayendra Ghatge,who hails from the Royal Holkar family of Indore(MP) had very good looks,physique and height.More dull looking Heros in films than him,. have done better than him over the years.
Vijayendra started his career with CHITCHOR-76,in which he was simply fab.So far he has acted in about 82 films till Aazaan-2011 and about 10 TV serials.His role of Vrushbhan in Buniyaad was superb and memorable.His daughter is Sagarika Ghatge,an actress and a model.

Neeta Mehta quit films in 1986 and settled in California. She married a Gujarati businessman and is blessed with three daughters. She is happy in the US and doesn’t want to think about her not-so-happening career in Bollywood. When she was working with Sanjeev Kumar in Hero, she fell in love with him but Sanjeev did not agree to her proposal.
Neeta grew up in a chawl in Malad before she was discovered by Raj Khosla. Her uncle worked in Filmistan studios in Goregaon and that is when Raj spotted her in 1975 when she had come to visit the studios as a school girl. Her father worked in the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam.
Despite being beautiful and talented, Neeta had to play 2nd fiddle to actresses like Sarika.
I heard she was offered the role of Hrithik Roshan’s mother in Koi Mil Gaya but Neeta wasn’t interested.

BTW, Shayad seems to be hugely inspired from Meena Kumari – Dharmendra – Raj Kumar starrer ” Dil Ek Mandir”. Except for the climax.
