Sun sun sun o gulaabi kali

Posted on: October 10, 2012

The music of “Saawan Bhaadon” (1970) was instantly lapped up by aam janta as soon as the songs of this movie became available. The energy and the verve with which these songs were sung made them extremely popular with music lovers, especially the least sophisticated among them like for instance kids in the under 10 years age category. 🙂

I was very much a pre teen and I loved listening to these songs. I became aware that these songs were from “Saawan Bhaadon” (1970). Even those days I could identify Rafi’s voice and also Asha Bhonsle’s. What more did I need to know ? The fact that music directors too used to be there and they told the singers how to sing the songs was not known to me. I thought that the singers themselves decided how to sing them. 🙂

It is only much later that I came to know that Sonik Omi were the music directors of this movie. The fact that debutants Navin Nischol and Rekha were the lead pair in this movie became known to me quickly enough, even though I did not get to mwatch the movie.

“Saawan Bhaadon” (1970) was released 42 years ago ! Can one believe it ! I can scarcely believe that so much time had passed. The lead actors of this movie have in the meanwhile retired, and in case of Navin Nischol, he has expired as well.

Today (10 october) is the birthday of Rekha, the debutant leading lady of “Saawan Bhaadon” (1970). What could be more appropriate than discussing a song from this very movie, where Rekha’s filmy career began. Here is a song from this very movie.

This song is a duet which is sung by Rafi and Asha Bhonsle. Verma aMalik is the lyricist and the music, as mentioned earlier, is composed by Sonik Omi.

Looking at the picturisation, one can see the duo dressed in garish coloured dresses that may be regarded as “uncool” now but which were the fashions of those days. And Rekha looks like a proper chhammakchhalo in her outfit. 🙂

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Khyati Bhatt.

Song-Sun sun sun o gulaabi kali (Saawan Bhaadon)(1970) Singers-Rafi, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Verma Malik, MD-Sonik Omi

Lyrics(Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

sun sun sun o gulaabi kali
teri meri baat ab aage chali
dil leke mera door door jaao na
jaa jaa
aaya hai bada chhaila dildaar rasiyaa
ho jo aage badha to khabardaar rasiyaa

sun sun sun o gulaabi kali
haay
teri meri baat ab aage chali
dil leke mera door door jaao na
arre jaa jaa
aaya hai bada chhaila dildaar rasiyaa
ho jo aage badha to khabardaar rasiyaa

mujhe palkon mein apni chhupa lo
sapna samajh ke
haay
meri khatir to fursat nikaalo
apna samajh ke
ho o
main hoon yaar tera
chhee
ho main hoon pyaar tera
chal chal
dil mein samaake tu jaana na
ruk ruk ruk misri ki dali
teri meri baat ab aage chali
dil leke mera door door jaao na
jaa jaa
aaya hai bada chhaila dildaar rasiyaa
ho jo aage badha to khabardaar rasiyaa

hai sadak pe liye dil ko phirta
majnu ka chela
ho
aahen bhar bhar ke raahon mein girta
kare ye jhamela
ho o
are kachhe shikari

achcha
ye teri hoshiyaari
jee
samjhe wo mujhko banaana na

gali gali poochhtaa hoon teri gali
teri meri baat ab aage chali
dil leke mera door door jaao na
jaa jaa
aaya hai bada chhaila dildaar rasiyaa
ho jo aage badha to khabardaar rasiyaa

dil apna kisi ko to dogi
hum kyaa bure hain
jaa
meri marjee jahaan pe bhi hogi
laakhon pade hain

ho o
ye mera waasta hai
wo tera raasts hai
jaati hoon mujh ko bulaana na

jaayegi kahaan tu o kanwaari kali
teri meri baat ab aage chali
dil leke mera door door jaao na
jaa jaa
aaya hai bada chhaila dildaar rasiyaa
ho jo aage badha to khabardaar rasiyaa
jaa
aaya hai bada chhaila dildaar rasiyaa
ho jo aage badha to khabardaar rasiyaa

Atulji,
This “chhammakchhalo” was hardly sixteen years of age (1954 born) when this movie was released. mere cousin ki shaadi mein ye geet pehli baar suna thha. During those three days of celebrations and few movie songs playing day and night, gaana to yaad rehna hi thha. Abhi itne saalon baad (42 years OMG!!!) suna, phir bhi yaad thha, so writing this song was like a piece of a cake. 🙂 Thanks for posting.

Arunji Help 🙂
If I am not wrong,Rekha started with Biswajeet with Anjaana safar, which was got stalled because of some reasons.Later on that movie was released with the name of Do Shikari in 1979.(lyrics of Rekha`s song from that movie,is with you.)
Even before or at that time itself she acted in a black & white Kannada James Bond type of Movie with Kannada Hero Dr.Raj Kumar

The name of Kannada Movie, where Rekha starred with
Raj kumar(Kannada Hero) is “Operation Jackpot C.I.D.999″(1969)

Wikipedia wrongly mentions Rekha`s movie with Raj kumar as
“Goadalli C.I.D. 999” (In which Julie Lakshmi starred with Raj kumar-in 1968)

This song and ‘Lage pachasi jhatke’ became very popular. I do remember some magazine saying that the viewers of the movie (male, I am guessing) got ‘pachasi jhatke’ on seeing Rekha.
