The tale of Tarzan was used in Hindi movies beginning from 1937. The original Hindi Tarzan movie was called “Toofaani Tarzan” (1937). This movie was a Wadia Movietone production. It was directed by Homi Wadia. The movie had John Cawas in the title role. Today (16 october) is the 64th birthday of Hema Malini. She ruled the roost in 1970s. So much so that she was described as dream girl by the media. To capitalise on this sobriquet, Pramod Chakraborty actually made a movie called “Dream Girl” (1977) signing up Hema Malini and Dharmendra.

I am aware of the film ‘Siskiyaan’ which was released in 2005 but did not know that a film with the same name was made some time in early 50s until I stumbled upon a beautiful song ‘tum bhi wohi ho main bhi wohi hoon’ on YT a few days back. I liked the song so much that I at once sat down to decipher the lyrics for posting on the blog. But on a second thought, I got a doubt about the singer of this song which the YT uploader has credited to Kishori Amonkar. As far as I know from the various sources of the websites, Kishori Amonkar’s first Hindi film song as a playback singer was “geet gaayaa pathharon ne” in 1964. Mogubai Kurdikar did not like her daughter to venture into playback singing career. As a result, Kishori Amonkar did not sing for any films until Drishti (1990) for which she was also the music director.

“Vidyapati” (1937) was directed by Debaki Bose. This movie had Pahadi Sanyal in the title role with Kanan Devi acting opposite him. This movie also had Prithviraj Kapoor, Chhaya Devi, K C Dey, Kidar Sharma and Leela Desai.

Shankar Jaikishan, the most dominant music directors during the golden era of Hindi movie music ruled the roost for two decades from 1949 to 1968 till R D Burman rose like a meteor and changed the rules of the game.

While most Hindi movies of the early days used stories from Indian mythological tales, there were a few movie makers who looked westward into Arabian/ Persian tales. Then there were a few who looked even further into tales of Western world and used them.
