Main kal phir miloongi isi gulsitaan mein

This article is written by nahm, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

After a long time I found a Lata-Rafi duet. And it is composed by S D Burman and written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

There are few songs by this combination. In fact there are only six such songs. This is the last remaining Lata Rafi duet by S D Burman-Majrooh Sultanpuri combine to be posted. This is the list of songs of this combination already posted.

Song Movie Year
Sheeshe ka ho ke patthar ka dil Baat Ek Raat Ki 1962
Dil pukaare aare aare Jewel Thief 1967
Aaj ko junli raat maa Talaash 1969
Palkon ke peecche se Talaash 1969
Teri bindiya re Abhimaan 1973

Six songs from the film Dr Vidya(1962) are already posted here. This film had Manoj Kumar and Vijyantimala in lead roles. This particular song is a playful light romantic song picturised on Manoj and Vijyanthimala. Vijyathimala is in the title role of Dr Vidya. But she is making a fool of Manoj Kumar by pretending to be an illiterate. The tune of the song is familiar as it is the same tune which was later reused for this song Kisi ki muhabbat mein sab kuchh bhula de in “Kaise kahoon” (1964).

And some of the comments on youtube seems to imply that this tune is by R. D. Burman. I wouldnt be so sure. And personally i like to look for the influence of S D Burman’s style in R D Burman’s songs rather than the other way round.

Song-Main kal phir miloongi (Dr Vidya)(1962) Singer-Lata, Rafi, Lyrics-Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-S D Burman

Lyrics

main kal phir miloongi
main kal phir miloongi
issi gulsitaan mein
yahin shaam ko phir
mulaaqaat hogi
nigaahen jhukaa kar
jo kehni hai tum se
zara yeh to socho wo
kya baat hogi
nigaahen jhukaa kar

tum aaogi jin raahon se
un ko sajaa doon
main kaante hataa ke wahaan
kaliyaan bichhaa doon

main gulshan mein aaoongi
naghme sunaati
inn aakhon mein hongin
jawaan aarzuen
migaahon mein ulfat ki
saughaat hogi
nigaahen jhukaa kar

bahut sooni sooni mere
jeewan ki raahen
kisi hamsafar ko dhoondhen
meri nigaahen

sunaate ho tum to piyaa
apni kahaani
zara yeh bhi socho ke
tum se bichhad kar
kasak kya mere dil mein
din raat hogi
nigaahen jhukaa kar

abhi tum chali jaaogi
kar ke bahaana
magar shart yeh hai mere
sapnon mein aana

main sapnon mein aaungi
hansti lajaati
udhar husn hogaa
teraa chaand jaisa
idhar gesuon ki
haseen raat hogi
nigaahen jhukaa kar
jo kehni hai tum se
zara yeh to socho wo
kya baat hogi

main kal phir miloongi
issi gulsitaan mein
yahin shaam ko phir
mulaaqaat hogi
main kal phir miloongi

Thanks Atul ji ..!!
As Prakash ji has put it up, the tune seems to be similar to compositions of Roshan ji.

Agree with Pradeepji. It’s unbelievable that this team created only six songs. Any reason behind this beyond to believe fact? Is it the MS – SDB combo or MR – LM split or just all four as a team?
Thanks Nahmji for the post. Should I say Yipeeeeee for this quartet?

Khyatiben,

Interesting question. The reasons are as under

1. Prior to 1957, Majrooh Sultanpuri hardly got opportunity to work with S D Burman. Two films in which Majrooh was associated with SDB i.e., Paying Guest and Nau Do Gyaara had Dev Anand in the lead and it was mainly Kishore Kumar who sang for him.

2. From 1957 to 1963, Lata Mangeshkar did not sing for SDB until Bandini (1963).

3. When LM was ready to sing with SDB, she was not singing with Mohammed Rafi until about 1965. When she was ready to sing with Rafi, Majrooh had not much opportunity to work with SDB during 1965 onwards except in a few films of Dev Anand which means less opportunity for Rafi to sing. From 197O onward, the emergence of Kishore Kumar as a playback singer dented the chances of Rafi.

As a general reason, it may be noted that duet songs written by majrooh were mostly teasing ones for which SDB and other music director preferred Geeta Dutt or Asha Bhosle to sing with Rafi whenever he got opportunity to sing.

Sadanandji,
Thank you for solving the mystery by giving us indepth info. Sequence of these unfortunate time zones now makes me believe in this unbelivable fact.

Khyati
