In India all our social customs, traditions, calenders and Festivals are linked to Agriculture, because basically,even today, we are an Agricultural country. With almost over 70% population (as against 85% in 1947) living in Villages and depending on farming, even in these days. No wonder if all our major events have an Agricultural base.

Pati Patni (1966) was R D Burman’s fifth released film, after his debut in Chhote Nawab (1961). Most probably his close friend Mehmood procured this project for him as well.

“Gumnaam” (1965) was based on Agatha Christie’s suspense novel “And then there were none”. And it must be said that this Hindi movie version added its own flavour to the story tailormade for its target audience. I am not sure that the original novel had a butler quite like Mehmood, for instance.

This movie had Rajesh Khanna,Asha Parekh, Premnath, Laxmi Chhaya, Bela Bose, Azra, Manorama, Anwar Hussain, Nana Palsikar, Sulochana Latkar, Padma Khanna, P.Jairam, Madan Puri, Jaishree Gadkar, Shivraj, Ram Avtar, Rajinder Singh, Kanu Roy, Dhanna, Saral Kumar, Nazir Kashmiri, Jeri, R.P.Kapoor, Indira Bansal, Malti Bai, Antenet, Fahmida, Narbada Shanker, Uma Khosla, Krishan Nanda, Rajendra Nath, Baby Nuzhat, Mansoor Khan etc in it.

In olden times there was a saying that one must visit Kashi(Benaras/Varanashi) before one dies.(There is an old saying in Western India ” Surat nu Jaman ane Kashi nu Maran”,which means,in your life you must eat food in Surat and Die in Kashi-both the best options).
