Tum mere pass hote ho goya
Jab koi doosra nahi hota
Most of the readers of this blog may have known this she’r albeit with a minor variation in the song o mere shaah e khubaan written by Hasrat Jaipuri in ‘Love in Tokyo’ (1966). But how many of us would have known ( including me until few months back) that this original she’r was written by Momin Khan ‘Momin’, one of the prominent Urdu poets in the Mughal court during early 1800s. And what a beautiful romantic she’r!. Mirza Ghalib who was the contemporary and a close friend of Momin is reported to have offered his entire ‘Diwan e Ghalib’ for Momin’s this she’r, one among the nine she’rs in his ghazal ‘asar usko jaraa nahin hota’.
Momin Khan ‘Momin’ (1800-1851) hailed from a family of hakims (physicians), originally belonging to the Kashmir Valley. His grandfather migrated to Delhi when he was appointed as a hakim for the Mughal royal family. His father who was also a hakim, wanted his only son to pursue the family vocation. Being a man of letters, he sent his son for a formal education in a madrasa to study Arabic and Persian. In the event, while Momin did become a hakim, he is better known today as one of the leading romantic Urdu poet.
Momin was a multi-facet personality. Apart from being a renowned hakim and a poet, he was a good singer, an astronomer, an expert chess player and an ardent flute player. He had no worry from the financial side thanks to his practice and the inheritance of the family pension of his father from the British Government. He lived a very comfortable life So what came out in his poetry was his romantic disposition. He is regarded as a Casanova having numerous love affairs during his short life. His poetry also reflects the conflict between being a ‘Momin’ (practicing muslim) and the lover of ‘but’ (idols, referring to his love for women).

One of his most famous ghazals by which Momin Khan ‘Momin’ is known worldwide is ‘wo jo hum mein tum mein karaar thha tumhen yaad ho ke na yaad ho’. This ghazal has been rendered by many famous singers as well as upcoming singers. But, in my view, the best rendition of this ghazal is by Begum Akhtar and I was toying with the idea of presenting her rendition of this ghazal in this article. However, while searching for the number of singers who have rendered this ghazal, I came to know that this ghazal was also sung in the film ‘Shikaayat’ (1948) by Kalyani, Manik Dadarkar ( aka Manik Varma) and Chorus. The highlight of this ghazal was that it was sung as an all female qawwali. Unfortunatley, the video clip of this qawwali is not available but luckily is available in the audio clips in two parts.
SHIKAAYAT (1948) was produced under the banner of Navyug Chitra and was directed by Shahid Lateef. The film has Shyam and Nigar Sultana in lead roles with Agha, Snehlata Pradhan, Raj Mehra, Sanalini Devi, Baby Shankutala etc in the supporting roles. The songs were set to music by Rashid Atre. I have no idea about the film’s story but from the title, it appears to be of the genre of family/social drama.
Compare the mood of the ghazal sung in qawwali style with that of the one sung in a soulful voice by Begum Akhtar.

Happy, and actually surprised, to see someone write about Momin. Most people do not know him or have simply forgotten about him. They only remember Ghalib and not his contemporaries.
