Aah, eighty one sonorously musical years. Well, almost all of them, :). Greetings and best wishes Asha ji, on this personal fabulous milestone in the journey of life.
Born in 1933 and active since 1943; that surely is a lot of active years, and lots and lots of time to steal a lots and lots of hearts with her songs. It has been a very tuneful time since the first strains of her voice were heard on the Hindi cinema screen with the songs ‘Saawan Aaya, Saawan Aaye Re’ (‘Chunaria’, 1948) and “Hain Mauj Mein Apne Begaane, Do Chaar Idhar Do Chaar Udhar” (‘Raat Ki Rani’, 1949).
Her voice has it all – the versatility, the spunk and sparkle, the naughtiness, and the poignancy. So many of the best songs in all genres have come to life with her voice. Her identification with the songs of sizzle and mischief is very well established, and so is her abilities to sing the tender and emotional numbers like “Baithe Hain Rehguzar Par Dil Ka Diya Jalaaye” , “Raaton Ko Chori Chori Bole Mora Kangnaa”, “Do Boonden Saawan Ki” , “Jaa Ri Pawaniyaa Piya Ke Des Jaa”, “Kaali Ghataa Chhaaye Mora Jiya Tarsaaye” , “Kho Diye Hain Sanam Teri Talaash Mein”, “Kis Jagah Jaayen, Kisko Dikhlaayen” , “Pyaar Hi Mujhe Darkaar Hai” , and many many more such songs that adorn her discography spanning nearly seven decades now.
Traversing her songs from 1970s, I am a bit surprised to see that this song is not yet presented on this blog. During its time when this film – ‘Mr Natwarlal’ was released (1979), this song had made quite a splash and was frequently played on the radios. I also remember that this song became one of the favorites of singer groups who perform at parties and weddings. The quickfire lyrics are from the pen of Anand Bakshi and the racy spicy music is by Rajesh Roshan. On screen, the song is performed by Rekha. She has been captured by the gang of dacoits. Amitabh Bachchan is on way for her rescue. Sensing the situation, she begins a dance and song to create a diversion, and take the attention of her guards away from everything else. A very interesting song in a very interesting situation. And full marks to Asha ji for the singing prowess displayed.
