The year 1950 saw the release of 36 songs by Mukesh, from 16 films. (This information is as per the Mukesh Geet Kosh). Of these, we already have 28 songs posted here on this blog. This is the 29th Mukesh song from the year 1950. I am continuing the search for the rest. I have been able to locate five more songs, but two songs are still eluding me. One song is from the film ‘Bebas’ – a solo song “Do Dil Hon Do Dilon Ko Ulfat Ka Sahara Ho”. The second song is from the film ‘Preet Ka Geet’ – a group song along with Zohrabai and Geeta Dutt, “Paayal Bole Re”. I request friends and readers on this blog to kindly share any information about the availability of these songs.

One aspect of the unexpected interludes on the Hindi film screen are the occasions when one gets to see songs performed on screen by the most unexpected actors. One does always expect the lead pair or pairs and occasionally the side heroes and side heroines to be performing songs of all types on screen. Of course the main comedy players are almost always expected to be performing songs of all types on screen. If you see the name Mehmood or Johnny Walker or IS Johar or even Jagdeep in the credits, one can be almost certain the film will have some song by them. This has been true for these actors, even during their senior years – one can see Johnny Walker in ‘Shaan’ (1980) joining the group song “Yamma Yammaa. . . Ye Khoobsurat Samaa”.

“Roopkumari” (1956) was directed by Manibhai Vyas for Chitra Bharti Productions. The movie had Mahipal, Roopmala, Shakila, Maruti, Chandrashekhar, Tiwari etc in it.

Today (4 january 2014) is the 83rd birth anniversary of Nirupa Roy(4 january 1931- 13 october 2004). In the past, I, like many other movie wathers of my time associated her with the roles of hapless mother. Later on, I realised that she had played the roles of leading lady for nearly two decades before she began to play the roles of bhabhi and then maa in Hindi movies.

I was introduced to English pop songs sometime in 1988-89 by none other than my son. He would play those pop songs recorded on a couple of audio tapes and I would be compelled to listen to them. Soon I started liking many of those pop songs. By 1991, T V channels like MTV had started telecasting the videos of some of those pop songs. Watching the pop songs with videos was a new experience for me. Even after two decades, I still recall a few of those pop songs which I used to like – Stevie Wonder’s ‘I just called to say I love you’, Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat it’, George Michael’s ‘ Last Christmas’, Eric Clapton’s ‘Tears in heaven’, Paul McCartney’s ‘Hope of deliverance’ etc.
