The vast ocean of the Hindi film songs contains innumerable gems that lie hidden from the eyes, in the depths.  These gems, overshadowed by the waves of the popular melodies, more often than not, are even more endearing and more heartwarming than the popular tunes that capture the attention of the listening public.  And it is the true connoisseurs of this art that will delve into the deep to search out such gems.  It is these connoisseurs that value the sounds of the voices such as Suman Kalyanpur.

Greetings and best wishes to Suman Kalyanpur ji, on her birth anniversary (28th January).

Be it the sounds of sheer joy and abandon as in “Aha Aha Aa Ye Suhana Safar” (‘Suhana Safar’, 1970), or the voice emerging from the soothing depths of serene love as in “Chale Ja Chale Ja Chale Ja, Jahaan Pyaar Miley” (‘Jahaan Pyaar Miley’, 1969); or be it the vivacious tunes in foot tapping rhythms, as in “Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche Har Zabaan Par” (‘Brahmchari’, 1968) or the sedate beauty of the classical mould as in “Aj Hoon Na Aaye Baalamwa, Saawan Beeta Jaaye” (‘Saanjh Aur Savera’, 1964),  the  voice of Suman ji conveys the emotions in all its shades.  As one of the senior artists, she may not be active in the industry, but she continues to delight the listeners with memories of the melodies that are forever.  A few months ago, she was in Delhi, and presented a stage program that was a mix of Hindi and Marathi songs and bhajans.  The evening was enchantment itself, as she sang number after number in her voice that still sounds as young and without any strain.

(Note: for a little more detailed bio sketch, I refer to the article accompanying the song “Nazar Ka Mil Ke Jhuk Jaana”, posted earlier.)

For today’s greetings, I present this song that from the 1968 film ‘Jyot Jale’, that has been sent in by Khyati Behn.  In her message accompanying the lyrics, she says,

“I am not familiar with the movie but looking at this song and the others listed in the Geet Kosh, the film seems similar to ‘Jaagriti’ (1954), including the presence of Abhi Bhattacharya in both the films. This song reminds me of other prayer songs – “Hum Ko Mann Ki Shakti Dena” (‘Guddi’, 1971), “Itni Shakti Hamen Dena Daata” (‘Ankush’, 1986) and “Hamen Un Raahon Par Chalna Hai” (‘Maasoom’, (1960).”

The song is written by Govind Moonis (this is his second song to be showcased on our blog).  Music composition is by Basant Prakash.  Folks will remember that he is the younger brother of famous music director Khemchand Prakash.   I was a little intrigued by seeing this name in a film from 1968.  And quite so, as I scanned the Geet Kosh, I find that this is the last film for which Basant Prakash composed the music.  His career in films starts in 1951, in which he shared the music direction credits with his then late brother, Khemchand Prakash.  From 1951 to this film in 1968, he has given music in eleven films.

The film is produced by Supra Pictures and is directed by Satyen Bose.  The cast of actors is quite detailed, apparently to include a fair number of students and teachers that would be part of such a storyline.  The names include Mahaveer, Nirupa Roy, Abhi Bhattacharya, Tarun Bose, Pardesi, Kundan, Asit Sen, Krishan Dhawan, Shahu Modak, Shanu, Seeta, Anoop, Bhandari, Rajendra, Azeez, Anwar, Farooq Merchant, Mehmood, Farooq Kadawala, Arun Kumar, Prakash Mishra, Bhola, Jerry, Updesh, Vallabh, Manik Dutt, V Gopal, Anil Kumar, Madhup Sharma, Lalit Kapoor, Champaklala, Shekhar Purohit, Vinod Sharma, Ravikant, Bazid Khan, Kesari, Moolchand, Ujagar Singh, Darshan, Bihari, and Vasundhara Devi etc.  Now I am just guessing here – the name Mahaveer is probably of the child who is apparently the lead character in the film, and who appears in this video clip, right at the start and continues to be in focus through the song.  We can also see Abhi Bhattacharya, who is sitting in a chair, with a bandage on his head.  The song is being sung by a girl child artist whom I am not able to identify.  I request other friends and readers to help identify her.

A very soothing listen to the ears, the melody slowly overtakes the mind, and continues to play.  A rousing invocation, very softly presented.  A pleasing and heartwarming song.  Enjoy.

Greetings again, and best wishes for good health, peace and happiness to Suman ji.

Chorus

Lyrics (Provided by Khyati Bhatt)

aa..o…..
aa..o ….
aao he jyotirmay aao

aakaash ujaale se bhar do
kirnon mein jag ko apnaao
jeewan ki raah ujaagar ho
aao he jyotirmay aao
aao he jyotirmay aao
aakaash ujaale se bhar do

aao phir nirmal dhoop khile
dharti se door andhera ho
sab soney waale jaag utthen
aisa ye naya sawera ho
praanon mein tej bharo apna
moti se ujle mann kar do
bhar do har gaagar amrit se
aise hey karunamay aao
aise hey karunamay aao
aakaash ujaale se bhar do
kirnon mein jag ko apnaao
jeewan ki raah ujaagar ho
aao he jyotirmay aao
aao he jyotirmay aao
aakaash ujaale se bhar do

aa aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

kaanton mein jo pag bhatke hai
unko phoolon ka pyaar miley
jinke madhuban bhi ujde hai
unko phir nayi bahaar miley
hmm mmmmm mmmmm
vanshi ke ush ke swar phooten
har swar mein goonj tumhaari ho
dharti par swarg utar aaye
aise hey mangalmay aao
aise hey mangalmay aao
aakaash ujaale se bhar do
kirnon mein jag ko apnaao
jeewan ki raah ujaagar ho
aao he jyotirmay aao
aao he jyotirmay aao
aakaash ujaale se bhar do
kirnon mein jag ko apnaao
jeewan ki raah ujaagar ho
aao he jyotirmay aao
aao he jyotirmay aao
aao he jyotirmay aao
aao he jyotirmay aao

“Bhai Ho To Aisa”. 🙂 Thanks Sudhirji for the lovely, quick and informative post. Basant prakash was a younger brother of KP is news to me. Govind Moonis, writer of this song is not too familiar for me. Can I request you to provide his short biography?
Looking through the HFGK is more than finding a jewel in a mine. “Chanda ko dhoondhne sabhi taare nikal pade….” Ab doosre gaane ki khoj mein nikalti hoon….. 🙂

Very interesting to know Gobindji’d contribution in Hindi cinema! Assisting director to Satyen Bose in almost all his movies to begin his career in Mumbai, dialogue writer for few films of Rajshri production and getting an opportunity to direct their Nadiya Ke Paar independently, as a lyricist in few films and then screenplay writer of few telefilms… His contribution for the social and cultural activities is also amazing…. Great people, great contributors of Hindi cinema 🙂
Thanks Peevesie’s Momji for this wealth of info.
