“Mard”(1985) was a Manmohan Desai production. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Amrita Singh, Dara Singh, Nirup Roy, Prem Chopra, Kamal Kapoor, Bob Christo, Dan Dhanoa, Satyen Kappu etc in it.

The main difference between Amitabh Bachchan of 1970s from 1980s was that the makers of 1970s Amitabh Bachchan movies wanted to make movies that would entertain people. They paid attention to storyline and tried the make the characters and their story somewhat believable enough.

But the Amitabh Bachchan movies of 1980s had begun to take their audience for granted. Sign up Amitabh Bachchan and that is all you need to do. People will watch the movie because it had Amitabh Bachchan-that was the general consensus was among movie makers.

It was for this reason that I had difficulty enjoying most Amitabh Bachchan movies of 1980s. The Amitabh Bachchan of 1980s was no longer the lean, mean and hungry looking actor of 1970s who carved a niche for himself in Hindi movies. This Amitabh Bachchan was a well settled, well fed actor resting on his past laurels. His movies of 1980s did not offer anything new rather they tried to present the same old wine in the same old bottle. At least that is what I felt. But Amitabh Bachchan still had his following and these devout followers would still make a beeline to watch his new movies even though these movies were no patches on the earlier movies of Amitabh Bachchan, often made with the same movie makers.

“Mard”(1985) was Manmohan Desai production. Yes, the same man who gave us “Amar Akbar Anthony”(1977) and “Parwarish”(1977) in the past began to make movies like “Coolie”(1983), “Mard (1985), “Ganga Jamuna Saraswati” (1988) etc where he would recycle the same old tired formula again and again.

Personally, the last Manmohan Desai movie that I enjoyed was “DeshPremi”(1982). Ironically, this was one Manmohan Desai movie that did not do well at the box office. Perhaps this movie was far too logical for the taste of majority of Manmohan Desai fans.

I did not enjoy “Mard” (1985) and I may not have seen more that a few scenes of this movie on VCP in my hostel days. I did not watch this movie on big screen.

When I look up at the details of “Mard” (1985) on wiki, I find that this was the biggest grossing Hindi movie of that year. It shows that Manmohan Desai knew his audience intimately and that people who looked for logic in his movies were not his target audience in any case.

Here is a song from “Mard” (1985). This song is sung by Shabbir Kumar. Prayag Raj is the lyricist. Music is composed by Anu Malik.

The song is picturised on Amitabh Bachchan and he is shown heckling Prem Chopra in this song.

Song-Buri nazar waale tera munh kaala (Mard)(1985) Singer-Shabbir Kumar, Lyrics-Prayag Raj, MD-Anu Malik

Lyrics

buri nazar waale tera munh kaala aa aa
dil hai tera kaala aur lahu bhi kaala
ae saala
buri nazar waale tera munh kaala aa aa
dil hai tera kaala
aur lahu bhi kaala
ja saala
hey
buri nazar waale tera munh kaala aa aa
dil hai tera kaala aur lahu bhi kaala

arre o paise waale
tere haathon pe lahu hai
kahin hai roti maata
kahin pe vidhwa bahu hai
arre o paise waale
tere haathon pe lahu hai
kahin hai roti maata
kahin pe vidhwa bahu hai
yaad rakh ye sabak
inki tarah tu bhi tadap
hum muflis to roz hi thoda thoda marte hain
shuru se gareeb ka aisa hi naseeb hai
shuru se gareeb ka aisa hi naseeb hai
daulat to door hai bas khuda hi kareeb hai
gareebon ke munh se toone chheena niwaala
tere jurm sah ke hamne tujhko paala
waah saala
buri nazar waale tera munh kaala aa aa
dil hai tera kaala aur lahu bhi kaala

tere mehlon ke neeche
kayi mazdoor dafan hain
tere sar pe to chhat hai
hamaare sar pe kafan hai
tere mehlon ke neeche
kayi mazdoor dafan hain
tere sar pe to chhat hai
hamaare sar pe kafan hai
noton ka bistar tera par neend na aaye zara
in mahlon mine rahkar bhi tu chain nahin paata
toot’ta badan hai apna
saare din ke kaam se
toot’ta badan hai apna
saare din ke kaam se
tu bhi karle thodi mehnat
soyega aaraam se
kyun jubaan hai band lag gaya taala aa aa
mard ki aulaad se pada hai paala
aa saala
buri nazar waale tera munh kaala aa aa
dil hai tera kaala aur lahu bhi kaala
