When Khyati Behn sent in the lyrics of this song, she said, and I quote , that she “. . . was KB Exp to see that this film hasn’t yet found its place on the blog. Koi baat nahi, ab kar dete hai. 🙂 “.  Well we all know, with Khyati Behn, the messaging has to be something out of the ordinary.

So two things prompted her to send in this song.  One, that after the stupendous success of ‘Sholay’ in 1975, this was the next occasion, after 5 years, that Dharmendra and Amitabh together appeared in a film, in which they sang a friendship duet.  And the second of course is the mystery trail of Amitabh songs that Atul ji seems to be going after with a great passion, and so she thought she will also pitch in.  Well, more the merrier, and it really applies to music, especially Hindi film music, and especially for the group of friends and readers of this blog, all passionate about Hindi film music.

So here we are, maybe not any closer to getting a preview of the mystery targets towards which the posts of the past couple of weeks seems to be heading.  But we do have one more wonderful song of these two stalwarts together, from thirty five years ago.

The film is ‘Ram Balram’ from 1980.  It has to be special, since it is directed by the redoubtable Vijay Anand for Navjeevan Films, Bombay.  However, that could not still change or better the history, and this film was no patch on ‘Sholay’ from five years earlier.  For comparison sake, lets see what changed and what didn’t.  Kishore Kumar still was the voice behind Amitabh.  The lyrics still come from the pen of Anand Bakshi.  However, much else changed.  In ‘Sholay’, Kishore Kumar was the voice of Dharmendra, whereas five years later, it is now Amitabh that Kishore sang for.  In the previous instance, Manna Dey had sung playback for Amitabh, and in this song, Mohammed Rafi sings for Dharmendra.  And yes, the important change – the music director changed from RD Burman to Laxmikant Pyaarelal.

The motor bike with the companion carrier changed into a three wheeled car. Interesting choice this one, because this car came into the market, appeared in some show rooms, kept away from the roads and then quietly disappeared. The singing voice for Dharmendra changed from Manna Dey to Mohammed Rafi.  The only other repeats in the star cast were Amjad Khan and Helen.  The rest of the start cast consists of Zeenat Aman, Rekha, Ajit, Sujeet Kumar, Prem Chopra, Nazneen, Urmila Bhatt, Ranjan, Utpal Dutt, Subrato Mahapatra, Master Lucky, Sandeep, Lalita Kumari, Asit Sen, Mohan Sherry, Kirti, Bharat Kapoor, Madhup Sharma, Meghdoot, Moolchand, Ram Avtar, Mamaji, and Gautam Sarin.

Ah yes, one more significant difference is that both the leading men are not on the same side of the law.  Plus that they have links going back into their childhood, whereby it gets explained as to why these two, apparently on the opposite sides of the law, are great friends.  The magic of “Ye Dosti. . .” could not be recreated.  Although the tune created by LP is pleasing and different, but the zing that was present in the earlier song, is absent.

As Khyati Behn points out, this film opens its account on the blog today.  More to come as we move forward.  Till then, view, listen and enjoy this one.

PS: The above corrections to the text of this article are based on the correction point out by Sam ji, in the comments.

Kishore Kumar did not sing for Amitabh in Sholay. He sang for Dharmendra, while Manna Dey sang for Amitabh.

Dharmendra was the bigger star and so he got all songs plus Kishore Kumar for Sholay. Equation had changed by the time Ram Balram came out. Hence now Amitabh had more prominent role and voice of Kishore Kumar while Dharmendra got Rafi’s voice.

In fact, there were rumors that many scenes of Dharmendra got chopped off from the movie in the editing room courtesy of Mr Bachchan and hence they didnt work together for decades.

Dear Sam ji,

Thanks for pointing out the correction. A bad on my part that I did not confirm to check and correct my memory, before posting this article.

I have now made necessary changes to the article above.

@ Sudhir ji – thanks for the post !!
@ Khyati ji – thanks for this song. Yes, this was pending, but then the movie is from the 80s …
Almost two years back when Harvey ji completed Gulzar-Pancham songs, I had suggested this movie to him to take up next, but it did not take-off 🙂 🙂
Thanks !!

Sudhirbhai,
To aap ne is gaane ki pehchaan karke is chalchitra ka khata khol diya… Badhiya kaam kiya. Is chalchitra ke doosre gaane bhi badhiya hai, lekin usko baad mein nyaay denge. Ab is khoj mein hoon ki doosre kaun sa chitrahaar ka khata khulana baaki hai. Ab bhed bhaav karna to achha nahi hai na… 😉

Another thing I have noticed that
Director Ramesh Sippy
gave 2 songs for Manna Dey
that were lip synced by Dharmendra in Ramesh Sippy`s
Seeta Aur Geeta
1)Abhi to haath mein jaam hai, tauba kitne kaam hai(a solo)
2)zindagi hai khel, koyee paas koye fail, anaadi hai koyee(duet with Asha)

And Kishore gave playback for Sanjeev kumar(in Seeta aur geeta)
1)Hawa ke saath saath(duet with asha)
2)Koyee ladki mujhe kal raat sapne(duet with lata)

and another song(which was not picturised on screen) for Manna Dey in Sholay(directed by Ramesh Sippy)
“Shuru hota hai phir baaton ka mausam:(a song sung by Anand Bakshi,Bhupinder Singh,Kishore, Manna dey)

Just for tivia sake ……..

arrey there is one correction needed in the the tags….. this is not a 1954 movie. 😉
and please may i draw the attention of all those who are a fan of this song to the car these two are traveling in….. it was a three wheeler car. some Indian company had tried to come out with this version of the small car back then. people were really fascinated by the small car and then the Maruti 800 arrived. (just another trivia following PCji)
the car was so small that it doesn’t seem to suit both the heroes height possibly that is y Dharam preferred to travel on the top and the bonnet 😉
also did anyone notice that in the shot where the guys carry the car its steering wheel and tyres vanish miraculously (i ve been noting all this since back then when the movie released and i simply don’t seem tired of pointing all this)
