Aa Dekhen Zaraa Kis Mein Kitna Hai Dum

Posted on: September 4, 2015

This article is written by Peevesie’s mom, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a contributor to this blog. This article is meant to be posted in atulsongaday.me. Does the name Sunil Sikanderlal Kapoor ring a bell in our minds? No? But if I say “Nandu, sabka Bandhu”, will that help us to identify the person I am talking of? I think the answer will be yes, by some of the regulars in the blog. Now one more famous line from this actor—“main crime master GO-GO, ankhen nikal ke goti kheloonga”. I can quote so many of his dialogues that I will stop here or the readers will say –“Samajhta nahin hai yaar” (she is boring us). Now I am sure that all of you would have come pretty close to identifying the actor who celebrated his 58th birthday yesterday (3rd September).
(Note: The article was received in good time yesterday, but could not be posted in time. 🙂 )

I am sure we have all loved and loved to hate the characters played by this multi talented entertainer. He been around since 1975 but it was his performance in the movies ‘Qurbani’ (1980) and ‘Rocky’ (1981) really got him his place in Bollywood. There was a time in the early 80s when along with Kader Khan, Aruna Irani and Asrani he was present in all of Jeetendra’s movies. The heroines would change but this four were a must in the movies of that time.  Jackie Shroff played his chamcha (lieutenant) in “Swami Dada” and he went on to become the villain in Jackie’s debut movie (as hero) “Hero”  the very next year. He has completed 40 years in the industry and now his daughter is also walking in his footsteps. He is a decent dancer, although he was made to lose in a competition scene in the 1981 ‘Rocky’, as the storyline of the movie required the hero Sanjay Dutt to win. He has shared dance scenes with Mithun Chakravarty, Govinda and Amitabh Bachchan too.

Let us have a dance number to wish this Dilliwaala Dilwaala a very Happy Birthday. It is the same one, I referred to in the previous para. It is written by Anand Bakshi and RD Burman is the music director. Jalal Agha plays the host for the competition and Shammi Kapoor is the chief guest. The play back singers are Pancham (aka RD Burman himself), Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle.  Half way through the song the playback singer gets interchanged amongst the male artists— I think this is very rare. The dancers in this song are Sanjay Dutt, Rena Roy, Tina Munim and Sunil Sikanderlal Kapoor a.k.a Shakti Kapoor. (I am sure everyone would have guessed it by now.)

Thank you very much for an entertaining piece, Ma’am.
I had not known that Shakti Kapoor entered Hindi Film industry at a very young age of only 18 years.
Every film lover who has been familiar with the films in the decade of 1980s would automatically think of Shakti Kapoor as soon as the name of Kader Khan is mentioned.
Regards.
