Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 02
———————————————————————-

wo dil jo maine maangaa thaa magar gairon ne paayaa thaa
badi shai hai agar, uski pashemaani mujhe de do

Yesterday I visited the page again on the song ‘Tum Apna Ranj o Gham, Apni Pareshaani Mujhe De Do‘. I know the words are ‘badi shai hai agar‘, on which there is the long thread of comments. ‘Shai’, in common urdu is a thing or an object.  ‘badi shai hai ‘ literally means , its a big thing or a big deal.  As it is said in English that ‘its a big deal for me’ or means a lot to me.

Yes I understood the meaning here, finally. Sahir Ludhianvi is saying that :

The heart that I claimed, is bestowed on others
The thing is, let me see the regrets (if you have any to show)

The big thing here is revealing the true feelings, keeping the ego aside.

We move to the Rafi solo from the film ‘Shaan’ (1980).   I remember the time when this movie was released with great fanfare.  Big premier and all that razzmatazz.  The second coming of blockbuster ‘Sholay’ which never happened, as the movie bombed on box office.  This was a big multi starrer with big names.  But in one aspect, it had what Sholay lacked that is the name of Mohammed Rafi in the credits list of playback singers. Sometime during the 80’s I had started looking for Mohammed Rafi’s name in the titles of whichever old movies I saw.

One song from the film ‘Shaan’, a Rafi duet with RD Burman is already posted in the blog – “Yamma Yamma Yamma Yamma, Ye Khubsoorat Samaa“. Incidentally, myswar.com mentions a trivia about this song. According to them, RD Burman wanted to re-record the duet as he was not happy with Rafi Sb’s singing.   Apparently he could not do so as Rafi Sahab passed away. I read this just a few days ago, but my own impression about the duet, whenever or wherever I have heard it, is that Rafi Sahab’s spirited singing and voice is the reason the song sounds so ‘sureela’.   But I concede that RD Burman was a master musician, and must surely have known far far better than mere lay person i.e. me and a biased one at that. I have heard the songs of this film on all sort of instruments beginning with the Phillips radio (the rectangular wooden box) and our first National tape recorder. Till early 90’s I used to record songs from the radio on to the cassette.

The song I am presenting as song No. 2 of the revived series, is ‘Aate Jaate Huye Main Sab Pe Nazar Rakhta Hoon’, written by Anand Bakshi and composed by RD Burman. I have always marvelled at the strange appeal of the singing voice here. The words are defiant and mocking towards the people better off than the character ‘Abdul’ played by Mazhar Khan. This song is the highlight of Mazhar Khan’s career. It shows up the Mumbai city both for its glory and its murkier side.

The effort Rafi Sb puts in for a débutante’s one moment in the sun, is the factor making this song such a strong statement. The emphasis on the alphabet ‘aeen’ with which the name Abdul begins is out of this world. Rafi Sb is doing as a generosity of heart, as many times as the name is repeated in the song.

One cant help but notice how he sings the word ‘haal’  in the lines of second antaraa and again in a different way in the repetition. Fans of Rafi Sb know that he has done this throughout  his career in numerous songs. Launching of 1000 ships? Not really, but  a realistic 100 ships is far better than the mythical 1000 ships !

sar kisi ke saamne jhuk jaaye meraa
ye mujhe manzoor nahin
aa pade waqt to mohtaaj sahi
par main majboor nahin

I will not consent to bow my head
In front of a mere mortal
If times of trouble come upon me
I may be indigent
But in no way am I helpless
(That’s my faith in the Almighty)
