Today, the 9th of June, happens to be the birthday of our beloved Arunkumar Deshmukhji. I realized this only a couple of hours ago, otherwise I would have prepared a post for him beforehand.

But better late than never – and it is still his birthday – so if Atul can post this in time, we are not late for the event. 🙂 Am used to doing things last-minute anyway – much to the frustration and annoyance of many who need to face the consequences of my delayed actions. 🙂

Today (9 june 2016) happens to be the 26th death anniversary of Asad Bhopali (10 july 1921- 9 june 1990 ). The acronym of this blog ( Atul song a day) also reads ASAD. That way, many of us in this blog regard Asad Bhopali as the patron saint lyricist of this blog. 🙂

This post could be considered the Pakeezah of this blog. No, not for its quality but for one aspect alone. It was started on the 7th of November 2015 and is being completed now, in June 2016!

Hullo to everyone in Atuldom

Its been long since I had any idea that inspired me to write. But 9th June is one date which I just cannot let go without writing something about.

Before I give the importance of this date here are some stray thoughts that came to me. I am sure all of us have many friends as we journey through life. I am also certain that they will be in categories like building (Housing society) friends (meaning friends who lived with us in the apartment we grew up in), school friends (this will cover all the friends we had in school be they junior or senior to us), class friends or classmates as we choose to call them. Then further in life we have college friends and office friends. Now for people in Mumbai there would be an additional set of friends –train friends and I have personally witnessed the kind of masti (fun) these people have to and from their work place. I have seen that in the general compartment the groups of friends will play cards or have bhajans etc. They also celebrate peoples’ birthdays and other happy occasions in the journey that can be anywhere between 45 minutes to one and half hour depending on where the last person gets off.

People who are experienced Hindi movie watchers will know that songs and dance play the same role in these movies as the term “black hole” plays in Astronomy. Wherever in doubt, introduce a song and dance (or a black hole) as the case may be and your target audience is satisfied. 🙂

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 46
——————————————————–

I take it as a privilege to present the 100th song of a low profile music director who was very active during 1937-1948 though his musical career in films extended till 1965. I have described him as a low profile music director because he and his music has rarely been discussed in articles and books pertaining to Hindi film music. Even Dr Ashok Da Ranade, in his book ‘Hindi Film Song – Music Beyond Boundary’ has not found it necessary to discuss the technicalities of his musical scores who was music director for 58 films aggregating over 600 songs. The music director under discussion is Gyan Dutt.
