Today (1 october 2016) is the 110th birth anniversary of S D Burman (1 october 1906- 31 october 1975). He made his debut as a music director in Hindi movies in 1946 (some half a decade prior to the beginning of golden era of HFM) and bowed out in 1975 (some half a decade before the end of the golden era of HFM). So it can be said that S D Burman was one of those music directors who was in the thick of action for much of the golden era of HFM. In fact, he was one of the major contributors to the golden era of HFM.

According to my estimates, S D Burman created some 672 songs in all in HFM (including non film songs). The blog has 583 S D Burman compositions at the moment. So less than 100 S D Burman compositions remain to be covered in the blog.

S D Burman composed music for 89 released Hindi movies and one unreleased movie. The blog covers 87 of these movies. “Chittor Vijay” (1947) and “Deewaangi”(1976) are two movies not yet represented in the blog. Songs of “Chittor Vijay”(1947) seem to have become extinct. “Deewaangi”(1976) songs could be available though I have not yet searched for these songs.

62 movies with S D Burman’s music have already been YIPPEED in the blog. There are a few movies where the last songs seems elusive, for instance “Aath Din”(1946) and “Shikaari”(1946).

On this occasion, here is a song from “Apna Haath Jagannaath”(1960). This movie was directed by Mohan Saigal for Deluxe films. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Sayeeda Khan, Nazir Hussain, Shivraj, Sabita Chatterjee, Jagdev, Leela Chitnis, Nandkishore etc in it.

This song, the seventh from the movie to appear in the blog is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. The song, a Krishna bhajan is picturised on Leela Chitnis and others.

Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

It is interesting to note that the previous song from this movie (the sixth song) was discussed in the blog last year on the occasion of S D Burman’s birth anniversary on 1 october 2015. One can be sure that we will not wait that long to discuss the next song which will be the final song of this movie in the blog.
