KRISHNA LEELA (1946) was produced under the banner of Geetanjali Pictures, Bombay and it was directed by Debaki Bose. The star cast included Kanan Devi, Paresh Bannerjee, Ranjit Roy, Suprova, Debi Mukherjee, Hiralal, Kamal Mitra, Gokul Mukherjee etc.

It is interesting to note that the film was produced by a Bombay based film production company and the cast and crew were mostly Calcutta-based. The film production company was a partnership firm of Lakhmidas Anand and Fateh Chand Kapoor, the latter being the father of Shashi Kapoor (Sr.). Under this banner, they produced 3 more films – ‘Sawaal’ (1943). ‘Lady Doctor’ (1944) and ‘Faisla’ (1947).

Another interesting point about the film was the association of Debaki Bose as director. He had mostly worked for New Theatres, Calcutta during 1932-41 except a short break when he directed films like ‘Seeta’ (1934) for East India Company, Calcutta. A list of Debaki Bose’s filmography seems to indicate that directing mythological and devotional films like ‘Chandidas’ (1932), ‘Puran Bhagat’ (1933), ‘Seeta’ (1934), ‘Vidyapati’ (1937) etc were his forte. His filmography list also shows that Debaki Bose had directed films like ‘Apna Ghar’ (1942) and ‘Meghdoot’ (1945) produced by Bombay based film production companies. Debaki Bose was the first director who experimented with background music in ‘Chandidas’ (1932) and using songs as the continuation of the story in the film. He is also credited with discarding the theatrical style of loud dialogues and gestures by actors.

The film had 13 songs written by M N Pran (11) and Faiyaz Hashmi (2) which were set to music by Kamal Dasgupta. As many as 7 songs were sung by Kanan Devi with Jagmohan Sursagar and Ranjit Roy singing 2 songs each. Singers in respect of remaining 2 songs are not known. None of the songs from the film were available on YT until I recently uploaded two songs. A two-part song sung by Jagmohan Sursagar is also available in mp3 format which I will upload on YT shortly.

I am presenting the first song ‘chanda door gagan mein bulaaye’ sung by Kanan Devi to appear on the Blog. The song is written by M N Pran and is set to music by Kamal Dasgupta.

Enjoy the song which has been composed in a melody typical of the Bengal school of film music.

With this song, ‘Krishna Leela’ (1946) makes its debut in the Blog.

Song-Chanda door gagan mein bulaaye (Krishna Leela)(1946) Singer-Kanan Devi, Lyrics-M N Pran, MD-Kamal Dasgupta

Lyrics

chanda…….aaaa
chanda door gagan mein bulaaye ae
aur chakori ee
aur chakori pahunch na paaye ae
kya preet ne hai khel rachaaye ae
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main na maa..noon

panhaarin ban kali niraali ee
yauwan ras ki gagri khaali
panhaarin ban kali niraali ee
yauwan ras ke gagri khaali
jaa jaa
bhanwraa
pyaas bujhaaye ae
pyaas bujhaaye ae
kya preet ne hai khel rachaaye ae
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main na maa..noon

nain baawre ae ae ae ae
nain baawre pardesi ke ae
mujh se na dekhe
sapna kisi ke ae
sapne kab sach hote haaye ae
sapne kab sach hote haaye ae
kya preet ne hai khel rachaaye ae
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main na maanoon
chanda door gagan mein bulaaye ae
aur chakori pahunch na paaye ae
kya preet ne hai khel rachaaye ae
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon
main kya jaanoon
main na maanoon

The production house of Gitanjali pictures was surely a Bombay based company. However, one of the partners of the company Laxmidas Anand went to Calcutta to make this film. Thats how all actors and crew are from Calcutta.
Kanan Devi was a very busy artiste in those days and her name was famous all over India. She used to get very lucrative offers from Bombay producers, but she wrote to them that it was not possible for her to leave Bengal now. In case they were keen to work with her, they should come to Calcutta, make the film and go back.
However no one did that….except Laxmidas Anand. Not only he went there to make the film, but also paid Kanan Devi an amount which no artiste in Bengal had ever dreamt.
This is what Kanan Devi wrote in her autobiography ” My homage to all ” about making of film Krishn Leela-46.
