The history of Hindi film songs indicates that, by and large, singers who have been formally trained (gandabandha disciples) as Hindustani classical/semi-classical vocalists had the marginal presence in the Hindi films as playback singers. They mainly concentrated on their career as public or private concert singers. Some of them like Mukhtar Begam, Begam Akhtar, Indubala, Angoorbala, Kamala Jharia etc who were actor-singer during the early phase of the sound films, later concentrated on their career as vocalists in Hindustani classical and semi-classical genres.

Today’s song is from the film Prarthana-1943. The film was made by Minerva Movietone. The music was composed by Saraswati Devi. After a vertical rift between a disgruntled group led by S. Mukherjee in Bombay Talkies, the group left Bombay talkies and established their own Filmistan studio. Many people went with them. Some remained with Devika Rani. Saraswati devi also left Bombay Talkies but became a Free-Lance, without joining any group. The cast of the film was Sabita Devi, Motilal, Jahanara Kajjan, Nimbalkar, Menaka, K.N.Singh and many others.

Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post was suitable for 19th August. 19th was the remembrance day of Khayyam the music composer who began his journey in Bollywood in 1947, when he sang a song with Zohrabai Ambalewali. His first as a music director was in 1948 as ‘Sharmaji’ of the ‘Sharmaji-Varmaji’ composer Duo. The statistics page of the blog says that Khayyam saab has given music to 377 songs in 42 movies. That may seem too little when compared with music directors who were active during that period; but each song of his were ‘pure pleasure on the ears’. Songs like ‘shaam-e-gham ki kasam’ (1953) or ‘tum apna ranj-o-gham’ (1964) are still popular as also the hits from the ’70s and ’80s: ‘aa jaa re, aa jaa re o mere dilbar aa jaa’, ‘kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai’, ‘dikhayi diye yun ke bekhud kiya’, and many more that I grew up listening to, of course at that age only the songs used to play in my head, I never knew details about singer, composer, lyricist etc.

Today’s song is from a film which is 86 years old- Pardesi Sainya-1935.
When I choose a film song for a post, there is always a thought behind it. Sometimes the cast consists of some actor who spilled over from the silent era and is on the verge of ending his career now. Sometimes the Director or the Music Director is absolutely unknown or a first timer on our Blog. Such and similar matters arouse my interest and I start gathering information about these people. Many times, I am the first person to write about that actor or director etc.

Today’s song – a qawwali – is from the 1979 movie “Aatish”. Memories of this qawwaali were revived when I was listening to a daily programme on Vividh Bharati. I had earlier shared another song from the same movie. That song too was a result of memories coming alive when I listened to that song on Vividh Bharati. That was in March-2021, and the song was Main nehlaa thhi bas nehlaa ….
