Hullo Atuldom

“Barsaat Ki Ek Raat” was a Shakti Samanta produced and directed 1981 release. It starred Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee, Utpal Dutt, Amjad Khan, Abhi Bhattacharya, Prema Narayan, Sujit Kumar, Asit Sen etc. Music was by R. D. Burman & Anand Bakshi was the lyricist. Songs were in the voices of Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle.

The film had 5 songs of which the following 3 are on the blog:

Song Date posted
Apne pyaar ke sapne sach huye 10 October 2009
Haaye wo pardesi man mein kaun disha se aa gaya 11 October 2009
Manchali ho manchali kaun si hai ye gali 4 April 2019

The movie was set in the picturesque North Bengal region- Darjeeling to be exact. Tea gardens formed the backdrop for most songs. It was a made simultaneously in Bengali as “Anusandhan” and was based on a Bengali novel. The Bengali version was more successful as compared to the Hindi one.
Abhi Bhattacharya played an official of the tea gardens and Rakhee was his blind daughter.

Amjad Khan (Kaliram) played the local goonda- element who is a law unto himself and has all the vices possible. Utpal Dutt (Sahuji), who is Amjad Khans’ father in the movie, is also the cause of the areas’ problems. He instigates the workers to strike against Abhi Bhattacharya etc. Additionally, he is involved in cross border smuggling.

Into this set up, Abhijeet (Amitabh Bachchan) walks in. Initially the locals have no clue about who he is. And he gets into a tangle with Kaliram on numerous occasions, today’s song is one such tangle, though a musical one.

It happens on the occasion of Durga Puja. Kaliram tries to impress the local female populace with his “dhol playing” and challenges Abhijeet to outdo him. What follows is a song in the voice of Kishore Kumar and Kaliram being mocked by Abhijeet. We have the blind Rakhi in the audience with Prema Narayan giving hee live updates.

This used to be a song that came regularly on Doordarshan.

We are having the song today to remember Panchamda (birthname:- Rahul Dev Burman) on his 29th remembrance anniversary.

For those who are his fans, it is common knowledge that he was son of legendary music director/ singer Sachin Dev Burman and Meera Burman. People are said to be born into riches Panchamda was born into music.

I have read at various places that SD Burman was proud to be referred to as Pancham’s father in the 70s. He was friends with the music director duo Laxmi-Pyare and has played the harmonica in some songs composed by the duo. The duo have also appeared on-screen in a song was composed by RDB. His closest friends in the industry were Rajesh Khanna, Kishore Kumar, Gulzar, Dev Anand & Gulshan Bawra. The trio of Rajesh Khanna- RDB – Kishore Kumar worked together in 32 films. Panchamda was nominated for around 8 films at the Filmfare and won 4 of them, the last one was posthumously for “1942- A Love Story”.

I can go on writing about his songs which are my personal favorites and may still miss a few lived songs. Today’s song is also one from my playlist.
