Hullo Atuldom

I must say that I am spoilt with choices for a song to go with this post. I checked our blog’s “List Of Songs- Moviewise” page and I can see many eligible movies whose song can be used.

I think I will take the easy way out and settle for one of the movies from the 1980s whose most differently (hatke as filmfolk would like to say) romantic song is yet to arrive on the blog. This song shows how beautiful a simple sari-clad lady can look. Post this every actress worth her name was ready to drape a saree and romance the camera on the condition that it gave them as much fame as the lady in this Sky-Blue saree achieved. Of course, through the 100+ years of Indian cinema, a saree was considered sign of a Bharatiya (to be understood as domesticated) Nari. There were the odd songs or situations where the lady used to get wet & the wet-saree would make the villain lust after her or the hero would get passionate with her (depending on who is with the lady in the scene).

But this 1987 song was a different level altogether. A class of it’s own. The credit for the choreography goes to the leading choreographer of those days- Saroj Khan. It seems she took very little time to set the steps but she has said in an interview that it was a difficult song. I have read somewhere that it was shot in Srinagar. The song was written by Javed Akhtar and Laxmikant- Pyarelal were the music director duo. The duet was sung by Kishore Kumar and Alisha Chinai. Some critics hailed the director Shekhar Kapur for “inserting grown-up feelings into an otherwise family-friendly film without being tasteless” by this song.

Yes we are having a song from “Mr. India”. Only two songs from this movie are on the blog.

This movie had Sridevi, Anil Kapoor, Amrish Puri, Harish Patel, Sharat Saxena, Ajit Vachani, Satish Kaushik, Annu Kapoor, Ashok Kumar (in a guest appearance) and a whole lot of cute kids- many of whom have grown up into the film industry and made a name for themselves in various departments of filmmaking. There was Aftab Shivdasani – now an actor, Ahmed Khan who is now a choreographer, producer, writer, director etc.

This film had Sridevi looking fabulous in every scene. She was excellent in the scene where she dressed up as Charlie Chaplin from “The Tramp” and we got to see her comic timing. And finally today’s song. Dancing with an invisible lover- too good.

With this song we remember Sridevi who died an accidental death on 24th February, 2018; in a Dubai hotel leaving her family and fans in shock. She was one actress who had a huge fan following – across the length & breadth of the country; across all age groups and genders.
