#Ahinsa-1979#
——————————
“Ahinsaa-1979” was directed by Chand for ‘Ashwin Arts, Bombay’. Shiv Kumar was the producer of this movie and it was passed by the Censor Board on 12.06.1979. Story of this movie was written by Chand and K.B. Pathak and dialogues were written by Jainendra Jain. Editing of this movie was done by B.S. Glaad.
The cast of this movie had Sunil Dutt, Rekha, Prem Nath, Ranjeet, Nirupa Roy, Alka, Kamini Kaushal, Rajendra Nath, Jayshree T., Jairaj, Trilok Kapoor, Tun Tun, Kundan, Mohan Shery, Bhagwan, Romeo, Jankidas, Birbal, Raj Kishore, Master Raju, Shiv Kumar, Keshav Rana, Rajan Haksar, Narendra Pathak, Major Anand, Ranveer Raj, Hiralal and others. Om Shivpuri, Dev Kumar, Shakti Kapoor, Shyamlee made friendly appearances in this movie. Asrani make a special appearance.
I had not watched this movie.
This is what is mentioned in the beginning of the movie:-
‘This movie is dedicated to all those criminals and dacoits who surrendered themselves to the law with the inspiration of Loknayak Shri. Jaiprakash Narayan’
The above dedication gives us some idea about the story line of the movie.
Hereis a reviewer on IMDB wrote about this movie :-
‘Ahimsa in Sanskrit means non-violence. A chance encounter between two widows who lost their husbands and sons to violence sets the story going. Birju (Sunil Dutt) has received the highest military honour in battle. He returns home to his village and promptly becomes an outlaw leader (dacoit). He crosses swords with a vicious dacoit called Raka. There is a slapstick comedian – Asrani who is the village priest who performs many a wedding. There is the usual mix of violence, attempted rape, forced marriage, theft, set in the 1960’s when men were men and rode horses. The tangle of family break-ups, the effect on children, single parenting, narrow minded rural India are all skillfully woven into the story.’
So, it is a crime and revenge story where the hero of the movie avenges his father’s killing by the Thakur (who is a bigger Thakur in status compared to the hero’s father). He becomes a dacoit and later on he surrenders to the Police as his mother wants him to take the path of ‘Ahinsa’. He lands in the jail where he meets another person whose mission is to protect public from anti-social elements of the society.
These characters are Birju (Sunil Dutt) and Premnath (Shambhu). When Birju lands in jail, he and Shambhu fight each other to assert their authority in the jail. After the first fight they become friends.
Next in the movie is the celebration of Independence Day where a cultural program is presented by prisoners. The jailor presiding the program announces to the audience that ‘aaj is aazaadee ke shubh avsar par hamaare qaidee aapke saamne kuchh program pesh karenge, ye apnaa taaruf khud denge ke ye hain kaun’.
That leads to the song under discussion.
The song is picturised on Sunil Dutt, Premnath, Bhagwan and many others. Anjaan is the lyricist and music is composed by Kalyanji Anandji.
This movie had a total total of four songs that were written by Rajkavi Tulsi (two songs), Ram Bharadwaj (one song) and Anjaan (one song). Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Manna Dey, Anand Kumar C., and Badri Prasad (mentioned in HFGK but not mentioned in the movie titles) had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
I had mentioned in my earlier post (while covering the first song of this movie) that only one song of this movie was familiar to me, viz ‘Yaar mera rab ho gaya’, which I might have heard on radio during my formative years . I hope to bring that song hereas well. 🙂 Meanwhile let us enjoy this song in the voices of Manna Dey and Mohd Rafi.
