“Kasauti”(1941) was directed by Ramchandra Thakur for National Stuudios, Bombay. The movie had Miss Rose, Prahlad, Veena, Sunalini Devi, Satish, Marutirao Pehelwan, Baby Meena, N A Ansari etc in it.
The story of the movie, as described by the acid tongued Baburao Patel in his characteristic uncharitable manner was something like this (as given by our beloved inhouse encyclopeadia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh:-
He says that the film was a tear jerker story. Raju (Prahlad) tries to prevent the suicide of a woman, who anyway dies. This is witnessed by the victim’s sister Meena (Veena), who is a vamp. She starts blackmailing him. She, calling herself now as Manjula announces her love for Raju. Raju is slated to marry Madhuri (Miss Rose). After some time, she tries to force Raju for her marriage with him. Raju’s mother comes to know all this. As a true mother she goes to Manjula’s house, gives her poison and kills her. Thus a dutiful mother saves the life of her son.
“Kasauti”(1941) had 13 songs in it. One song was subsequently deleted. These songs were penned by Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi (he later becaome well known as Kanhaiyalal, typically playing the role of a cunning money lender) and Neelkanthh Tiwari. These songs are very obscure songs.
One song of “Kasauti”(1941) has been covered in the blog in the past. Here is the second song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Veena Kumari, who as we notice from the story, played the vamp in the movie. The song is penned by Kanhaiyalal, who as we noted above, subsequently became an actor playing cunning characters. Listening to the song, I cannot help but conclude that the lyricist took the music director (Ashok Ghosh) for a ride in this song. The music director was given lyrics that had just 7 lines that were repeated again and again. For example, the line “Preet kee reet na jaane” gets repeated in the song six times. Other lines too get repeated multiple times.Music director tried hard to salvage the song by ensuring that music occupied half the time in this three minutes long song.
As mentioned above, not just this song, but all the songs of this movie failed to impress the audience and ended up becoming obscure songs.
Nevertheless, songs like this are of historical importance and so we need to preserve them if they are available.
I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks and / or suggest corrections.
