Asrar ul Hassan Khan (1 October 1919 − 24 May 2000), better known as Majrooh Sultanpuri, was an Indian Urdu poet and lyricist in the Hindi language film industry. He wrote lyrics for numerous Hindi films. He was one of the dominant musical forces in Indian cinema in the 1950s and early 1960s. He is considered one of the finest/ avant-garde Urdu poets of 20th century literature.
In his career spanning six decades (the first time he wrote for a film was in 1945/46 for KL Saigal starrer ‘Shahjehan’), he worked with many music directors – with some father/son pairs of music directors- Chitragupt & his sons Anand Milind; SD Burman & RD Burman; Roshan & Rajesh Roshan to name a few.
Normally, when I set to write a post, I look up songs listed under “List Of Songs Moviewise” to see if the 1st song from the 1st film, or the last song from the last film of the artist is already present on the blog. Then I look out for songs from films that I have heard umpteen times or know the background of. Very often, I also try to combine the works of two or three artists, who’s birthdays or anniversaries are on the same date or a date or two near each other.
24th May is a date when we remember Majrooh Sultanpuri. He passed away on this date in 2000 of a severe attack of pneumonia. He was aged 80 at the time of his death.
His last film as a lyricist was ‘One 2 Ka 4’, which was released after his death in 2001. ‘One 2 Ka 4’ had four songs by Majroohsaab & this song Machal jaane ka din hai is on the blog. A.R. Rehman was the music director of that film.
Majrooh saab’s musical journey began with Naushadsaab and went on till the A.R Rehman era. He was a poet/lyricist who’s songs are popular to this day. The album of the current blockbuster film “Dhurandhar” (2025) has used Majrooh saab’s superhit song ‘Monica’ from ‘Caravan’ (1971). The 2023 release “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” also used a medley of popular 1970s songs in a scene showing the affection between (golden couple) Shabana Azmi & Dharmendra with ‘haal kaisa hai janaab ka’ & ‘aao na gale laga lo na’ being part of the medley.
“Babu” (1985) had six songs that were penned by Majroohsaab. They were in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, Alka Yagnik & Kishore Kumar. The cast of the film was headed by Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini, Rati Agnihotri, with Mala Sinha playing the very important character of Rati’s mother. Deepak Parasher, Madan Puri, Baby Geeta, Om Shivpuri, Navin Nischol (I think it was a guest appearance as Mala Sinha’s husband), Rajendra Nath, Paintal, Agha, Mukri played characters that moved the film forward.
This post by Atulji, gives us a brief idea about the story of the film. The song in that post was a two-version song. Today, we shall have a song where the superstar-actors of the 1970s -Rajesh Khanna & Hema Malini- who reigned supreme for a very long time & were top-billed, lip-syncing to Kishore Kumar & Asha Bhosle. It is a less-heard song of the 1980s. It is a visual treat to see Hema Malini dance & Rajesh Khanna keeping (matching) step with her.
I am sure that followers of the blog would have guessed why I chose a song from “Babu”. I am attempting to bring a song composed by Rajesh Roshan on to the blog. 24th May happens to be his birthday. He turns 71 today. We already have a few songs contributed by Avinashji to celebrate the birthday. Here is one more.
