#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # R.D. Burman – Year 1977

‘Jeewan Mukt-1977’ was directed by Sudhendu Roy for S.R. Productions, Bombay. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.08.1977. It had Lakshmi, Parikshit Sahni, Girish Karnad, Mala Jaggi, Sudha Shivpuri, Pawan Dutt, Meena Rai, Master Gautam, Ashok Razdan, Dhanna, Asha Lata, Suresh Oberoi, Dinshaw Dazi, Shrimati Mistri and others.

As per HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) this movie had total four songs, which are all solo songs sung by Asha Bhonsle. Lyricist Yogesh wrote the songs for this movie and music was composed by R.D. Burman. During the process of presenting the songs from this movie here, I had come across a song sung by Kishore Kumar which is uploaded as an ‘unreleased song’ and some sources also mention it as an unreleased song from this movie- ‘Jeewan Mukt-1977’. However, I have not found any mention of this song either in Geet Kosh or in the famous biographical books on Kishore Kumar and R.D. Burman.

When I presented the first song from this movie here I had mentioned that, I had never listened to the songs of this movie earlier. For that matter I had never even heard the name of this movie. This movie must have sunk badly at the box office and as a result it must have ended up becoming an obscure movie of its time. The movie had some beautiful songs in it that were created by none other than the genius music director Rahul Dev Burman.

When I had initially started sharing the songs from this movie, the videos of couple of songs of this movie were available on internet. However there was no information available about the story of the movie or any other video of this movie. However, later, in recent times, I come across couple of videos from this movie available on internet. Watching these video we can guess about the storyline of this movie. One of these links give the following story of this movie, which I am reproducing below.

Jeevan Mukt (Hindi: जीवन मुक्त; translation: Freedom in Life) is a 1977 Bollywood drama film directed by Sudhendu Roy. This family drama stars Girish Karnad, Laxmi, Parikshit Sahni, Vidya Sinha in lead roles. This is the first full length film of Suresh Oberoi. The story is about Anita’s quest for love, her tribulations in this process and her ultimate realisation of freedom in life. Music composition – Rahul Dev Burman, Lyrics – Yogesh, Playback – Asha Bhonsle, Direction – Sudhendu Roy, Production – Sudhendu Roy.

The plot of the story according to IMDB is –

Tragedy and misfortune seem to befall her at every turn, but as she becomes more independent, a new lifestyle change may bring some unexpected results. Jeevan Mukt is a 1977 Bollywood drama film directed by Sudhendu Roy, focusing on a woman navigating tragedy to find independence and a new life. Starring Girish Karnad, Lakshmi, and Parikshit Sahni, this family film is known for featuring Suresh Oberoi’s first full-length role, with music composed by Rahul Dev Burman, director and producer: Sudhendu Roy.

Based on the two videos of this movie available on internet the plot of this movie can be deduced as below.

The movie begins with a narrator telling us about the story of Anita (played by Lakshmi). In the story it is shown that Anita is being felicitated for her achievements as an ‘artiste’. She had been shown as renowned painters of her time. And the journalists present there are asking about her achievements and her personal life. One of the journalists also asks her what lies at the foundation of her success. She replies that “The realization of truth—and the inspiration to reveal my true self through my paintings- is what you could call the foundation… The journalist further asks her if she has been a ‘disappointed lover’ in her personal life. She promptly replies him that ‘I’m not disappointed. I’ve overcome the dreamy life of love’.

Here we are told by the narrator that in her past life ‘she too had a thirst for love… an unquenchable thirst’. But she had sacrificed all to achieve success which could only come through the trials and tribulations of life, which gave her the true understanding of life and the true meaning of life. Here we are told about the important persons in her life who were Madhu (Vidya Sinha?), Satish (Parikshit Sahni), Arora, and Ranjeet (Parikshit’s son) and Amarjeet (Girish Karnad).

Here the story goes into ‘flashback’ and on screen we have actor Girish Karnad (Amarjeet) entering in the exhibition hall where Anita’s paintings are exhibited. While Amarjeet likes one of her paintings, but before he could move forward to buy it, one couple approaches Anita to buy it. Meanwhile Anita receives a call from a Hospital where the nurse informs her about her mother’s critical condition. Next we have Anita reaching the Hospital and the doctor informing her about the passing of her mother.

In another video of this movie available we have Anita entering Satish’s home where a child is playing with a housemaid present there. Anita has a conversation with the housemaid and in between Satish arrives there. Here it is shown that Anita and Satish are meeting after a gap of seven years. Satish and Anita were in love but Satish had to leave for abroad for his career/business and while Anita waited for him.

Satish also enquires about Anita’s mother and she tells him that she already passed away. Satish is surprised that Anita didn’t get married in all these years and she has to suffer. There Satish shares about his life story to Anita and tells her that he come back to India for his business and his wife is staying 12000 miles away from him.

I guess that either his wife didn’t accompany him to India or she is having some other priorities and she is not staying with the child and Satish.

After knowing this and looking into Satish’s busy life Anita proposes to look after the child in Satish’s absence. Satish gladly accepts this ‘ye tumhaaraa bhee to betaa hee hai’. Satish has an urgent meeting at Delhi and he leaves for Delhi. Anita befriends the child by showing her art and drawing some pictures and that is where the song ‘aao waheen ham chalen’ appears in the movie (which was posted on 26.02.2023 on the blog).

What happens next? And how Anita’s life moves forward is what the story of this movie should be, which as of now is not known to us. Some sources mention that this is Suresh Oberoi’s debut Hindi movie. Did he play the grown-up Ranjeet in the movie? We don’t know.

This movie made its debut on the blog on 27.06.2020, i.e. on the birth anniversary of Pancham, who composed the music for this movie. The song that was presented then was ‘lehraa ke dagar chalee jaatee hai kidhar’. Later on the second song was posted on 26.02.2023 (as mentioned above). The third song from this movie ‘hamne kabhee sochaa naheen kyaa hogaa kal’ was posted on the blog on 31.03.2026.

Today I am presenting the fourth song of the movie in the voice of Asha Bhonsle. Only the audio of this song is available. This song is a rarely heard song. Lyrics are by Yogesh and music is composed by Rahul Dev Burman.

With this song, all the four songs of “Jeewan Mukt-1977’ get covered on the blog. The movie can be considered officially YIPPEED. But seeing that this movie reportedly has yet another song in it, we can in future add one more song to this movie’s tally, which is not mentioned in Geet Kosh but which is attributed to this movie by some sources.

Till then let us listen to this rare and lesser-heard Pancham composition.
