Today’s song is from a comedy film ‘Sabse Bada Rupaiya’ (1955).
This film was made by Aalhaad Chitra, Poona. This banner was owned by producer, director of repute, Datta aka Dada Dharmadhikari. Aalhaad was his son’s name. He used to feature in his father’s films as a child artist. The film was directed by PL Santoshi. There were 2 MDs, namely Nashaad (3 songs) and OP Nayyar (6 songs). Lyrics were by PL Santoshi and Majrooh Sultanpuri. The cast of the film includes Shashikala, Agha, Aalhaad, Sunder, Nana Palsikar, Achala Sachdev, Krishnakant, Raja Gosavi, Premlata, Heera Sawant, Mubarak Begum, Vijaybala and others. Actress Vijaybala was the sister of the renowned Bollywood playback singer Mubarak Begum. Vijaybala’s real name was Mumtaz Begum. Here are a few interesting details about their relationship:
Mumtaz Begum, under the screen name Vijaybala, worked as an actress in a few Hindi films during the 1950s and early 1960s, including ‘Paisa’ (1957), ‘Chengez Khan’ (1957), and ‘Grihasthi’ (1963). In the 1957 film ‘Paisa’, Mubarak Begum sang a song that was picturized on her sister, Vijaybala. Unlike her sister, who continued her singing career, Vijaybala eventually left the film industry to get married and stepped out of the public eye.
The story of the film was about how a sudden windfall of good fortune changes honest and simple people.
Karodimal, a millionaire has a son Kishen, who treats money as a means to an end rightly. Karodimal has given huge loan to Gangaram, who can not repay. Karodimal wants to marry his daughter Laxmi, in return for loan. When Laxmi tries suicide, Kishen saves her and love blooms. They are about to marry when father comes to know, but the marriage takes place. One day Laxmi finds a big box full of notes. She hides it in junk. Her gambler brother Gopal sells that junk. When the truth is revealed all people are after the box. Human characters are revealed in this commotion.
All is well when Karodimal falls ill and only good nursing by Laxmi saves him, making him realize the value of human love.
There were 2 MDs in this film. One can see a few more films where more than 1 MD is involved. Especially in Hindi films made in the south or remakes of a southern hit film into Hindi. In those cases, the purpose is different. However, in most other Hindi films, 2 MDs are found due to 2 reasons, generally. One, the first MD leaves the film on his own due to some dispute. For example, Anil Biswas left the film ‘Girls School’ (1949) because he had a dispute with Kavi Pradeep, who was the producer of the film. After that, C Ramchandra took over as MD. Secondly, when one MD usurps the first MD’s place with a planned mischief.
In today’s film, the second reason was the cause. The first MD was Nashaad. This is very interesting and not many people know these things. OP Nayyar’s films like ‘Aarpaar’, ‘CID’, ‘Mr.&Mrs 55’, ‘Baap re Baap’ etc became very famous but he did not get any payments from Guru Dutt. Once OPN went to Guru Dutt to ask for his payments, as his small child needed milk and he had no money, but, according to OPN, Guru Dutt who was fully drunk, threw away OPN without any payments.
OPN had become very bitter and to make quick money he started snatching films from other composers. Roshan was removed from ‘Mehbooba’ (1954), Mohd.Shafi was removed from ‘Mangu’ (1955) and ‘Naashad’ was removed from ‘Sabse Bada Rupaiya’. All these films went to OP Nayyar.
When Roshan was removed from ‘Mehbooba’, Lata Mangeshkar became very angry (she respected Roshan) and she announced that she will not sing the balance songs of ‘Mehbooba’, to which OPN retorted, “but I am not asking her to sing in Mehbooba”. Enraged, Lata managed to garner support of Naushad, Anil Bishwas and others who took this matter of replacing Music Directors in the Cine Music Directors’ association, which boycotted OPN. He was not getting recording studios, musicians nor any singers for his songs. At that time Shamshad Begum stood by him like a rock and did all his songs free for him.
Even to such a great helper, OPN ditched Shamshad Begum in preference to Asha Bhosle, just like he ditched Geeta Dutt !
There is one name in the cast – Raja Gosavi. he had a very humble beginning, but with luck and hard work he became one of the most wanted heroes in Marathi films, in the 1950 and 1960 period. His name was Raja (King) Gosavi (Fakir). He himself used to joke about his own name.
Rajaram Shankar Gosavi (28 March 1925 – 28 February 1998) who was known as Raja Gosavi, was a film and theatre actor, in Hindi and Marathi. He is known as Dilip Kumar in the Marathi movie world.
Raja Gosavi was born on 28 March 1925 in Siddheshwar Kuroli village in Satara district (Maharashtra). Raja Gosavi’s education was up to 4th standard but in his own words he was BA (Born Artist). He has worked as an office boy in the film company of Master Vinayak (father of actress Nanda). Damuanna Malvankar was his mentor. He worked as a prompter with Damuanna’s Prabhakar Natya Mandir.
Raja Gosavi acted in the role of Nat Samrat in noted Marathi playwright Kusumagraj’s iconic and milestone Marathi play ‘Nat Samrat’ after Dr. Shriram Lagoo. Raja Gosavi was married to famous dancer actress Bharati, they have a daughter Shama (Deshpande).
Gosavi made his film debut in Datta Dharmadhikari’s ‘Akher Jamle’ in 1952 with Sharad Talwalkar. It was his debut too. Gosavi worked as a ticket-seller at Bhanuvilas Talkies, Pune for a few years and his film ‘Lakhachi Goshta’ opened there, which he promoted by selling the tickets both at the counter and in black. Raja Gosavi acted in 100+ Marathi and 7 Hindi movies. He worked in ‘Haa Haa Hee Hee Hoo Hoo’ (1955), ‘Sabse Bada Rupaiya’ (1955), ‘Bhabhi’ (1957), ‘School Master’ (1959), ‘Miya Bibi Raazi’ (1960), ‘Jo Huwa So Bhool Ja’ (1960), and ‘Private Secretary’ *1962).
Raja Gosavi died on 28th February 1998 in Pune. In TMV Colony, Pune, Raja Gosavi Road has been named in his honor.
The heroine of this film was Shashikala. Shashikala Jawalkar-Saigal (born on 4-8-1932), much better known as Shashikala. Shashikala was born as one of six siblings in Solapur, Maharashtra in a well-to-do Marathi-speaking Jawalkar family. By age 5, she had already been dancing, singing, and acting on stage in many towns in Solapur district. When Shashikala was in her pre-teens, through ill luck, her father became bankrupt, and he brought his family to Bombay (now Mumbai) where they thought that Shashikala, the best-looking and most-talented among his children, could find work in movies.
For some time, the family lived with friends and barely survived, while Shashikala wandered from one studio to another looking for work. She earned in bits and pieces till she met Noorjehan, the reigning screen queen. Noorjehan’s husband, Shaukat, was making a movie ‘Zeenat’ then, and included Shashikala in a qawwali scene. She received 25 rupees for her role. She struggled on and got small roles in movies made by PN Arora, Amiya Chakravarti, and a few other producers. She got roles in V Shantaram’s ‘Teen Batti Char Rasta’ and a few other movies. While in her early twenties, Shashikala met and married Om Prakash Saigal, who belonged to the Kundan Lal Saigal family, and had two daughters.
Acclaimed supporting roles: In 1959 she appeared in Bimal Roy’s ‘Sujata’. In Tarachand Barjatya’s ‘Arati’ (1962), starring Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, and Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala portrayed a negative role, eventually winning a Filmfare Award. Soon after, offers began to pour in to her for supporting roles. She appeared in ‘Junglee’, ‘Anupama’, ‘Phool Aur Patthar’, ‘Aayi Milan Ki Bela’, ‘Gumrah’, ‘Waqt’, and ‘Khubsoorat’. Meena Kumari, Padmini, Nutan, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, and Waheeda Rehman have been among the leading actresses with whom Shashikala performed in supporting roles. While the female lead costars in the involved movies usually played roles of good-natured, modest, or pious women, Shashikala usually played either flighty and feisty bubbly women or vamps who plotted the downfall of others.
Later in her acting career, she would typically play the role of a sister or mother-in-law. She performed in supporting roles in over 100 movies. Asha Bhosle was often the playback singer for Shashikala in her earlier career. “Sheeshe Se Pee”, “Bheegi Bheegi Faza”, “Zindagi Me Pyaar Karna Seekh Le” are three popular songs which Asha Bhosle had sung for Shashikala. In the past few years, Shashikala has performed in a few television serials, including ‘Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai’ for Sony, ‘Apnapan’ for Zee TV, ‘Dil Deke Dekho’ for Star Plus and ‘Son Pari’ for Star Plus. She has also had successful roles in ‘Mother’ (1998), ‘Pardesi Babu’, ‘Baadshah’, ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, ‘Mujhse Shaadi Karogi’ and ‘Chori Chori’.’Shashikala died on 4-4-2021 in Mumbai. She acted in 167 Hindi films and 74 songs featured her on the screen.
Shashikala received nominations for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award eight times, and won the award twice. Once in 1962 for a role in Aarti’, and second time in 1963, for her role in ‘Gumrah’, She received several awards for Best Supporting Actress (Hindi) at the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards – for ‘Aarti’ in 1963, for ‘Gumrah’ in 1964, for ‘Rahgir’ in 1970. Shashikala received the Padma Shri award (the fourth highest civilian award) in the year 2007 for her contribution to Indian Cinema. When she received the award, she said, “I have been recognized for this award very late, and indeed, I should have got this award long back.” She also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the V Shantaram Awards in 2009.
Here is a song, sung by Asha, Rafi, Shamshad, Balbir and chorus. Enjoy….

Very interesting write up. Incidentally, three songs of Baap re baap were scored by C Ramachandra and rest by OP. Less known facts about Raja Gosavi are also brought out very well.
