Hullo Atuldom

‘Bahubali’ (2015) was followed by ‘Bahubali- The Conclusion’ (2017). It was re-released in 2025, to celebrate 10 years of ‘Bahubali’, with the two parts combined and was called ‘Bahubali- The Epic’.

‘KGF – Chapter 1’ released in 2018; ‘KGF – Chapter 2’ came in 2022 and apparently a sequel to ‘Chapter 2’ titled ‘KGF – Chapter 3’ that was teased into the second film is in developmental stage.

The above two films along with ‘Pushpa’ and its sequels are all made in South India and were released simultaneously across India, dubbed into all possible Indian languages and were also well-accepted by the audiences.

(I have not seen the above films, don’t feel like seeing them too.)

Then, there was a film made in Tamil titled ‘Singam’ in 2010. This was remade in Hindi by Rohit Shetty as ‘Singham’ in 2011. Both the Tamil and Hindi versions had sequels, but each with their own storylines- meaning barring the 1st film the sequels didn’t borrow from each other. The Hindi “Singham” had sequels titled “Singham Returns” (2014), “Simmba” (2018) and “Sooryavanshi” (2021). 2024 saw “Singham Again” as the 5th instalment.

Even Yashraj Films had the Tiger series – “Ek Tha Tiger” (2012), “Tiger Zinda Hai” (2017) and “Tiger 3” (2023). Yashraj also has a “Mardaani” series, and some films with spies and RAW agents as part of the story line. (I have seen some of the films in the series and missed some, no regrets on that count)

These are some examples of some movies & their sequels. I am sure there are many films which have had sequels.

I am sure readers/ followers of the blog will be wondering where all of the above are leading to. I will explain.

There was a supremely comic/ romantic film in the 1950s. I am sure there is not a single Hindi film follower who has not heard of it or even seen it, at least once. I am talking of the classic ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (1958). It was a film that was made with the Ganguly brothers and Madhubala forming the lead cast.

It had the oldest brother -Ashok Kumar (Brijmohan Sharma)- running a garage along with his younger brothers – Anoop Kumar (Jagmohan) and Kishore Kumar (Manmohan). Brij Bhaiyya also has strict rule of no mingling with the female gender, which the younger brothers follow reluctantly. There is a lot of upheaval in the lives of the brothers when Madhubala (Renu) walks into the garage on a rainy night with a car that has stalled. What follows is lots of songs, romance, and some action (Dishoom Dishoom as the background sound effects in the scene would be) and entertainment for the audience.

The film went on to be a huge hit of its times

Fast Forward to 1982 (censor certificate is of November 1981)

A movie with the title “Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi” (CKNZ) released. It had Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar & Kishore Kumar playing Brijmohan, Jagmohan & Manmohan (all over again). The car from the 1958 film also features in the film. The opening shot of the film has the brothers Jaggu & Manu kick starting their car. That means the film was intended to be the part II of “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi”.

The film can be actually called, one of the true, first Bollywood sequels ever courtesy of the genius Kishore Kumar.

CKNZ had Nirupa Roy playing the bhabhi of Jaggu & Manu. Amit Kumar plays the son of Brij Bhaiyya.  Rita Bhadhuri, Y. Vijaya, Madhu Malhotra, Jaya Malini were the other ladies in the cast. Pradeep Kumar, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Pinchoo Kapoor, Bhagwan, Maruti, S.M. Sagar, etc were the others in the cast. Even the car CHAMPION CPV 65 has been mentioned in the film’s titles.

The songs of CKNZ were written by Noor Devasi, Afzal Irshad and Lalji Pandey (meaning Anjaan). Kishore Kumar was the music director, writer, producer and director of this film. He used Manna Dey, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohd Rafi, Shankar Das, Bhushan Mehta, Amit Kumar & his own voice for the male actors; even Anoop Kumar has lent his voice for a song. Asha Bhosle & Dilraj Kaur were the only female singers in the film.

Various sites on the internet give interesting trivia on CKNZ

(1) This was the last film in which the brothers appeared together.

(2) This was the last film for which Kishore Kumar was the producer. After this he directed ‘Mamta Ki Chhaon Mein’ which was produced by Amit Kumar.

(3) Pradeep Kumar, who was Madhubala’s hero in ‘Mehlon Ke Khwab’ (1960), which had Kishore Kumar as the second hero opposite Madhubala’s sister, was a grey-shaded character in this.

(4) Harindranath Chattopadhyay also had a grey character.

I landed on this film a few days back. On the occasion of the death anniversary of the legend Mohd Rafi.

I know there have been many songs in Hindi films were Mohd Rafi has lent his voice for characters played by Kishore Kumar. I also know that there have been around 70 songs which were Kishore Kumar- Mohd Rafi duets or songs with one or two other singers. I also know (from the many news items & videos that are easily available to the seeker) that the two singers, who started their singing careers in the second half of the 1940s, were huge admirers of each other. I have read that on hearing of the death of Rafisaab, Kishoreda (as he is fondly addressed) was inconsolable. I was looking for a Kishoreda-Rafisaab song to post on the occasion. But I missed that date.

4th August is the next best date. Why? It is the birth anniversary of the multi talented Kishoreda.

The song that we are having to celebrate the 97th birthday of the genius who liked to showcase himself as a joker is in the voices of legends Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi & Kishoreda. We can see Bhagwan also in the song, he plays a double role of a chef and the other of a music arranger in the hotel’s orchestra.

Hindi script lyrics (Provided by Sudhir)

आ..आक़
की ई ई ई ई
