Alphabetical list of actresses who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice- Part XII
(Actresses whose name begin with the letter L)
In the first eleven episodes of the series, we listed actresses whose names begin with the first eleven letters of the alphabet and who had lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. Then we went on to cover a song that was lip synced by another acresses whose name began with the same letter and who had not lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.
The exercise of finding a “new” actress whose name begins with a particular letter is being increasingly difficult. The three “new” actresses who made their debuts in the blog (as far as lip syncing in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is concerned) were Anju Mahendru, Bhanupriya, Chandrakala, Divya Bharati, Ekta,Farheen, Gulnar Irani, Harsha Mehra, Isha Koppikar, Jasmine and Khushboo.
In this episode, we arrive at the letter L. There are eleven actresses whose name begin with L who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog.

We observe that L is a letter that has given us a reasonable number of actresses in Hindi movies who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. Most of these actresses are lesser known actresses for Hindi movie lovers.
When it was time to look for a “new” actress with the letter L who had yet to lip sunc a song in Asha Bhonsle’s voice, the task was as tough as for some of the earlier letters. As it was , both our in house experts, namely Prakash Chandra and Sadanand Kamath jee came up with the same name independently. It was a name that I had never heard before.
This new actress who lips syncs in Asha Bhonsle’s voice is Laila, also known as Laila Mehdi. The movie is “Dushman Duniya Ka”(1996).
“Dushman Duniya Ka”(1996) was produced by Ashok Mishra, Babubhia and Masoom Ali and was directed by Mehmood. The movie had Jeetendra, Sumalatha, Manzoor Ali (debut movie), Mehmood. This movie introduced Laila, Master Abhishek, and Nasir. Ali Asgar, Wahid, Kailash, Punjabi, Anil Mehta, Fardeen, Gopal, Meghani, Neeraj Mishra, Salman, Raju Malhotra, Zaid Khan, Vishwanath, Krishna Bansal, Sweety Pareeikh, Baby Somaiya, Shweta etc were the other actors in the movie.
Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan had made special appearance in this movie. Ashok Kumar, Farida Jalal, Anjana Mumtaz, Rita Bhaduri, Raza Murad, Manmauji, Birbal, Liliput, Junior Mehmood and Johny Level had made friendly appearance in the movie.
This movie had eight songs in it. Seven songs were composed by Anu Malik. In addition, one song composed by R D Burman was also included in the movie. Two songs from the movie, including R D Burman’s composition have been covered in the blog in the past.
Here is this song from “Dushman Duniya Ka”(1996). This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Sudesh Bhonsle. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist. It is the first time where he was asked to write a chaalu kind of lyrics that was quite common in those days. Music is composed by Anu Malik. The song is picturised on Laila and Manzoor Ali.
This movie was Laila’s debut in film world. After this movie, she got offers in South Indian film industries. She established herself in Tamil film Industry. She has won Filmfare award for the best actress (Tamil movies) twice-in 2001 and 2003.She married an Iranian businessman called Mehdi and so she is also known as Laila Mehdi.
With the letter L done and dusted, next episode will take up an actress with the letter M. There are as many as 28 actresses whose names begin with M and who have lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice in the blog. This list includes some very well known actresses.
Finding a new actress whose name begins with the letter M and who has lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice was as a tough task but as usual our inhouse experts have made light of this work by coming up with the names of a few “new” actresses who names begin with M and who have lip synvced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice and are yet to make their debut in the blog. Wow, I am amazed at the list of the name of actresses, whose name start with ‘L’ and have a song sung by Asha Bhosle for them. The names Lilian and Lolita Chatterjee were completely new for me. Also Laila Mehdi, who features in today’s song and Lubna Salim, whom Sadanandjee suggested in the above comment are new names to me. Hats off to you!
I have another Leela to add to the list and it is our favourite on-screen Grandma of the 70s and 80s, Leela Mishra. The song “he sewak shree raam ke“ from the movie Jaadu Tona (1977) has Asha Bhosle and Hemant Kumar singing for Leela Mishra and Kanhaiyalal respectively.

“Dushman Duniya Ka” was the last film directed by Mehmood. It was based on Lucky Ali’s life (apparently) but Lucky Ali decided against doing the film. The character ‘Lucky’ was played by Mehmood ‘s other son Mansoor Ali (apparently his only film)
Laila was seen in a multi-starrer film in 2005 “Insan’ a K Shubash directorial. Ajay Devgan Akshay Kumar Tusshar Kapoor Lara Dutta Esha Deol were the known faces in the cast of ‘Insan’

Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

Atul ji,
I came to know about Asha Bhosle singing for Lubna Siddiqui (Salim) from the film, ‘Parbat Ke Us Paar’ (1988) only yesterday evening. Since the video clip of the song was not available, I was planning to rip off the same from the film and send you today.
Lubna Salim is a well-known theatre personality. She is the duaghter of playwright, screenplay and dialogue writer, Javed Siddiqui.
