Hindi Songs in Bangla Film – 30

In my last article, I had covered a fictional character, ‘Byomkesh Bakshi’, created by the writer Sharadindhu Bandopadhyay on which TV serials and films have been made. While writing the article, I recalled that Satyajit Roy has written stories on his fictional character, ‘Feluda’ who is also a detective and investigator. He had directed two Bangla feature films based on ‘Feluda’ stories – ‘Sonar Kella’ (1974) and ‘Joy Baba Felunath’ (1979). It will be interesting to note as to how these two detective characters differ in their style of investigations which I will come to it later.

Yes, this song is from film ‘Mohra’ (1994). Ah but I am not bringing on the film version of the song.
This very song was earlier and originally sung by Mukesh in his inimitable voice in the sixties. The film for which he had sang never reached proper production stages. The song has since remained and gets counted amongst the many NFS that he sang. There are almost no details available about Mukesh version and hence this post will be quite short and devoid of any tables, histograms etc. 🙂

A voice that sounds quite mature, dripping with heavy bass – a baritone that appeared to emerge from somewhere deep inside. Playing this sound on the songs like “Zindagi Pyaar Ki Do Chaar Ghadi Hoti Hai”, or “Lele Dard Paraaya Kar De Door Gham Ka Saaya”, or “Jaane Wo Kaise Log The Jinke Pyaar Ko Pyaar Mila”, “Ganga Aaye Kahaan Se. . .”, and many more of this ilk, sounds so natural and, well, so suitable. The deep bass gets to the perfect tone of poignancy that is needed for these songs.

We remember Nightingale of Punjab on her remembrance day today.
Surinder Kaur (25 November 1929 – 14 June 2006) was the recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri in 2006. She was the recipient of numerous other awards including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and also a doctorate degree by Guru Nanak Dev University. Much of her life details can be easily found on her wiki page and many other articles and interviews on the net.
Her popularity of course stems from the fact that she pioneered and popularised folk songs of Punjab to the rest of the world. However, readers are well aware that she had a very short but memorable stint in HFM in the late forties. She gave playback to 57 songs in 21 films during the golden era and many of her songs are remembered and played to this day.

I became aware about the stories built around the fictional character of Byomkesh Bakshi, the murder mystery solver when a TV serial based on these stories was telecast on the Doordarhsan’s National channel in early 1990s. The serial was directed by Basu Chatterjee with Rajit Kapoor playing the role of Byomkesh Bakshi and KK Raina as Ajit, his assistant. During those days, the character of Byomkesh Bakshi became known all over India. ‘Byomkesh’ became synonymous with persons having inquisitive nature.

So far I have discussed three of the six feature films which Sai Paranjpye has directed in her filmy career – ‘Sparsh’ (1980) in “Geeton Ki Duniya Mein Sargam Hain Hum“, ‘Chashm-e-Baddoor’ (1981) in “Is Nadi Ko Mera Aaina Maan Lo” and ‘Saaz’ (1997) in “Baa. . .dal Ghumadh Badh Aaye“. In this article, I take up one more film by her – ‘Disha’ (1990) which, is not well known to the public at large. Sai Paranjpye accords this film as her best feature film in terms of excellence in all the main departments of the film making – story, screen-play, dialogues, direction, and the acting contributions from all the actors associated with this film.

This is one of the songs of which made an impact at the time of watching the film. I had seen this film ‘Phir bhi dil hai Hindustani’ in theatre. This was before the multiplexes, so there were only the theatres, where the folks went to see the movie.
Now in multiplexes which are always above malls, there is the added temptation of shopping. This must be the reason, my husband is so reluctant to go to watch a movie. Over the last few years, I have also lost all interest in watching movies, altogether. As a weekend approaches, I am thinking I want to see this film or that film. Some of those I have seen earlier or some which I have never seen. But the weekend comes and goes, without my attempting to watch them. There must be lot of reasons for this lack of motivation.
