Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 24
———————————————–
‘Gali Theke Rajpath’ (Bangla film, 1959) was written and directed by Prafulla Chakraborty. The star cast included Uttam Kumar, Sabitri Chatterjee, Chhabi Biswas, Anup Kumar, Chhaya Devi, Tulsi Chakraborty, Bikash Roy, Shyam Laha, Sheela Paul, Helen, Jahar Roy etc. I have watched the video of a moderately edited film on one of the video sharing platforms. Probably, the film’s VHS tape was damaged as I found some ‘jumps’ in the continuity of the film’s story. Unfortunately, English sub-titles are not available. A short synopsis on the cover of the VCD of the film helped me to understand the film’s story in a proper perspective.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 7
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
kal raat sapne mein aaye thhey tum
mere mehboob mere mehboob
Sound of a temple bell – that is how the renowned music director OP Nayyar once described the voice of Shamshad Begum. The clear sound of the tinkle, the chime and the ringing – the quality of sound that can maybe best described with the word ‘खनकती हुई’ – I could not locate a commensurate word in English. I am sure friends and readers who have heard her songs will easily relate with what I am getting at.
Remembering Shamshad Begum today on the 101st anniversary of her birth. She was born in 1919, this day, just one day after Baisakhi, and the horrific massacre at Jalianwaala Bagh in the nearby city of Amritsar. She was born into a traditional and conservative family of limited means. One of the eight children in the family, her father was a mechanic with limited income and a large family to feed.

Let me tell you a bit about the background of this post. My nephew works as an RJ for a radio station and he has a slot called ‘Golmaal Gagan ne bol diya to bol diya‘, which is an audio review of latest movies. The way things are these days I am sure he goes through a lot of pain watching substandard movies. He praised a recently released movie called ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ (2020). After listening to his review of this film I decided to watch it. Just as I was mulling over when to go to watch the movie, I got a message from our fellow Atulite Avinash. He wanted me to write up a bidaai song that was used in the film. Very kindly, he even sent me the lyrics of the song to help me.

Divinity remembered today. Divinity – as in the voice of the divine – KL Saigal.
A hundred and sixteen years ago, this day, 11th April in 1904, was born a child who would be a legend within his own lifetime, short as it was, and forever be one. The legend continues to sustain more than a hundred years hence. The sound of the songs rendered by him continue to enchant generation after generation of listeners whose constancy of devotion has not, cannot be influenced by the superfluity of singing voices that have also performed since then. Saigal is Saigal, in his own might, in his own dimension – a voice that has not been matched in its depth, in its sentimental expression, and the effect it has on the minds and hearts of the listeners.

If there was a category like ‘post inspired by fellow Atulite’ or ‘post inspired by Atulite WA group chat’, this post would have been included under that category. This past Sunday there was a discussion between me and Peevesie’s Mom ji regarding the theme of the ‘Rangoli’ this week, which was Jaya Bhaduri/Bachchan, and so I messaged to her that I was expecting a post from her. Instead, she asked me that even I can do a post. And she also pointed out the birth anniversary of actor Jeetendra (and so if there was a song of Jaya Bachchan and Jeetendra, it would have been suitable for the post).

In my last article, I had discussed playback singer and actor Shyam Kumar, who has acted in many Hindi films but remained unidentified for most of the Hindi film audience. In this write-up, I am presenting one more such actor who has made us to notice him in many films but remained unsung because he did very small roles in most of the films in which he got opportunity to act – mostly as a sidekick, a henchman, a doctor, barman, hotel manager etc. Though his roles in most of the films have been very brief say, not be more than 5 minutes duration but whatever he did as an actor in varied roles, it was noticeable to the filmy audience. The actor is Keshav Rana whose face in the films may be familiar to many cine audience but may not be known by his name to them.

Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
un aankhon mein neend kahaan
jin aankhon se preetam door base
The contest between a heart in love and the nights of loneliness is as ancient as the written word itself. Poets of yore, across the ages, and to the present times, have all written about the tribulations of the nights of loneliness. Time does pass at its own pace, but for a lonely heart pining for love, it is as if the time has come to a standstill.
The acute anxiety of the empty moments wherein apparently nothing is happening, is something that cannot be explained in words. It is a sensation that has to be experienced, to get the true flavor of the feelings that are ensconced in the words ‘hijr’ (“हिज्र”) and ‘firaaq’ (“फ़िराक़”) – the feelings of separation, the feelings of being incomplete, the feelings of anticipation, waiting, the feelings of incessant yearning that seems to rend the heart asunder.

Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post was very popular in the 70s. We can hear it occasionally even now on the AIR’s Vividh Bharati. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist with RD Burman as the music director.
‘Bhanwar’ (1976) was directed by Bhappie Sonie and had a cast headed by Ashok Kumar, Randhir Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Ranjeet, Kamini Kaushal, Nadira, Madan Puri etc. Two songs from this movie are already posted on this blog.

Although not listed in the anniversaries list on our blog, a message yesterday from Mahesh ji reminded that it was the remembrance day of the music director Robin Chatterji. Some more discussion followed in which it was mentioned that Rafi Sb had never sung under the baton of this music director. Something tickled in the memory and I searched through the Geet Kosh listings and my collection, coming up with this wonderful solo of Rafi Sb, that he has sung for Robin Chatterjee, in a Bhojpuri film.
Remembering Robin Chatterjee on the anniversary of his passing away (2nd April, 1976).
