The 1976 film ‘Aarambh’ may not be a very well known film, but it does carry a unique distinction. It remains the only Hindi film for which the music has been scored by the famous Anand Shankar.

“Masoom” (1982) was inspired from “Man, Woman and Child written” by Erich Segal. And it must be said that the tale was very well adapted by Gulzar who wrote the screenplay and directed with great sensitivity and understanding by Shekhar Kapoor. There were few people in the audience who remained unmoved by the plight of eight year old Rahul (played by Jugal Hansraj), a result of one night affair between an unwed Bhawna (played by Supriya Pathak) and a happily married DK (Naseeruddin Shah) at Nainital at a time when DK’s wife Indu (Shabana Azmi) is expecting their first child. DK goes back home and has a happy family life with two daughters Pinky (Urmila Matondkar) and Minni (Aradhana).

Today (19 january) is the date of birth of Kaifi Azmi. To many music lovers of younger generations, he may be a lesser known name, and even to me, he was a “boring” lyricist when I was growing up. Having grown up (hopefully) 🙂 I have come to appreciate Kaifi Azmi better. We have over one hundred Kaifi Azmi songs in this blog and that speaks volumes about the fact that Kaifi Azmi was one of the major contributors in making the Golden era of Hindi movie music what it was, viz a memorable era for music lovers.

I have not watched the movie called “Talaaq” (1958) but from its songs and some online reading up (both could be misleading 😀 ) leads me to believe that Rajendra Kumar and Kamini Kadam get married, have a child (Honey Irani) then fight among themselves and then file for divorce. In all these, the child finds himself kicked around like a football. when the warring duo finally reconcile with each other and search for their child, they find out that he is not to be found. For all they know, he has become an orphan and who knows, he could well have ended up in an orphanage.

Abdul Rashid Kardar belongs to the trio of directors who are called the Movie Mughals of the Hindi cinema world. The other two directors in this group are K Asif (Mughal e Azam, Mohabbat aur Khuda etc.) and Mehboob Khan (Roti, Mother India, Son of India etc.). They are called Movie Mughals, as all of them approached their profession with a big heart, and budget was never considered a constraint in the face of quality or perfection of their creations. The movie names listed are an ample illustration of this trait.
