Tere jaisa yaar kahaan

I just expounded on my theory that Amitabh Bachchan tended to have quite a few “friendship” songs in his movies. In fact, the title of two of his movies themselves were friendship based- viz “Dostana” and “Yaraana”, both meaning “friendship”. Of course, there were “friendship” songs even in those Amitabh movies whose titles were different- viz in movies like “Zanjeer”, “Hera Pheri”,”Ram Balram” etc.

Barson puraana ye yaaraana

Amitabh Bachchan movies in 1970s tended to have quite a few songs about friendships. In fact, I can readily count 4-5 such songs off the cuff – from Zanjeer, Sholay etc. In fact, two of his movies containing such songs had their titles like “Yaaraana” and “Dostana”. 😉 Another actor “specialising” in movies with such titles was Shatrughan Sinha, who in addition to figuring in “Dostana” was there in “Dost” as well.

In Bollywood movies, jail inmates are often shown as comedians, and there are a few comedy songs in Bollywood movies sung by the jailbirds, viz in “Vishwanath”.
“Kaaliya” too has a jail song, but here it is a philosophical song. This song is not sung by the hero ( Amitabh) or any other main character of the movie.

I have listened to this song many a times, and I liked this song very much. Not only I knew that this song was sung by Mukesh, I was also aware that the movie was called “Raaste ka patthar”.

“Kasauti” was a movie with Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini in the lead. The movie flopped badly. But there was one song in this movie that became very popular those days. It was the song ” Hum bolega to bologe ki bolta hai”. It was sung by Kishore Kumar. But it was not picturised on Amitabh, the hero of the movie, but on Pran, the erstwhile villain who had turned a new leaf into a character artist those days. In this song, he dons the garb of a gurkha.

Jumma chumma de de

In this blog, I often talk of quality, class, originality etc while discussing songs. But there are occasions when all these admirable qualities take the back seat and we like to listen to songs that hardly seem to possess such high ideals. These are songs that are purely time pass low brow songs, shamelessly plagiarised, with lyrics that are no great shakes and may be even in poor taste, and with picturisation to match. And surprisingly, there are such songs who manage to become chart busters.

Gore nahin hum kaale sahi

In Bollywood masala songs, there is this typical situation where the hero must enter the high security den of the villain. The hero makes it to the den in disguise and the villains are unable to identify, despite his disguise often being nothing more than a thin moustache.

We all have seen and enjoyed Mahmood singing “Hum kaale hain to kya hua dilwaale hain” in Gumnaam. Some two decades later, Manmohan Desai has Amitabh Bachchan doing a Mahmood in “Desh Premee”.

This song from Namak Halaal is an awesome song. Just listening to this song cheers one up. Kishore Kumar has sung the song so well and with such enthusiasm that one can feel the enthusiasm every time one listens to this song.

This movie “Manzil” was one of the unsuccessful movies of Amitabh Bachchan, but this one song from this movie, viz “Rimjhim gire saawan” has become the stuff of legends already. It is one of the first songs that comes to mind when one thinks of rain songs.
