Today 18th August, 2024 is the ninety-first birthday of Poet, Lyricist, Writer, Director and Producer Gulzar Saab. On this occasion we are celebrating his birthday here on this blog by posting songs penned by him.
In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Naram Garam-1981’. It was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee for ‘Film Group, Bombay’. This movie was produced by Subhash Gupta & Uday Narayan Singh. The cast of this movie has Amol Palekar, Swaroop Sampat, Utpal Dutt, A.K. Hangal, Kiran Wairale, Padma Chavan, Suresh Chatwal, Anand, T.P. Jain, Sunder, Javed Khan, Bishen Khanna, Vijay Ghosh, Saral Mukherjee, Adarsh Tandon, Mukund Dada, and Chandramohan Khanna, Devi Chand, Shatrughan Sinha and others. Om Prakash, Dina Pathak, Meena Roy, and Neelu Phule had a special appearance in this movie.

Another Summer Olympics comes along. Once again, Indians have their hopes raised.
And once again, most of these are dashed.
Indians take out their frustration on a few athletes/players — and get back to their normal lives in a few days. Every four years – rinse, repeat.

This movie, a low budget “art” movie was based on a short story written by a well-known Hindi writer, Mannu Bhandari.

The cast included Sachin and Sarika in the lead roles supported by Nadira, Dinesh Thakur, Manik Dutt, Bharat Bhushan, Abha Dhulia, Sulabha Deshpande, Arvind Deshpande, Parveen Paul, T P Jain, Madhup Sharma, Jaydev Hattangadi, Gopal Dutt, Gulshan Grover etc. Benjamin Gilani and Prema Narayan made guest appearances in the film. In the last 2 decades, I have preferred watching films that interest me on video sharing platforms or on OTT. ‘Talaash’ (2012) was one of few films I have watched in a multiplex upon its release after reading the ‘very good’ reviews of the film. And I was not disappointed. The film was a slow gainer on the box office front. Eventually, the film became a ‘semi hit’. Recently, I watched the film on OTT platform to recapitulate its story which I now feel is a complex one.

‘Freaky Chakra’ (2003) was produced by V K Prakash who also directed the film jointly with Ziba Bhagwagar. The cast included Dipti Naval, Sachin Khedekar, Sunil Raoh, Ranveer Shorey (as narrator), Rajeev Ravindranathan, Pranam Janney etc. The film’s shooting was done from start to finish in 21 days in Bangaluru. Sunil Raoh has mainly acted in Kannada films, and this is his only Hindi film so far. He is the brother of playback singer, Sowmya Raoh.

‘Hatimtai’ (1956) was produced under the banner of Basant Pictures and was directed by Homi Wadia. The cast included Jairaj, Shakila, Meenakshi, BM Vyas, SN Tripathi, Krishna Kumari, Menaka, Sheikh, Vasant Pehlwan, Dalpat, Sardar Mansoor, Habib, Mithoo Miya, Aga Shapoor, Ranibala etc. The film was made in Gevacolour which was an additional attraction for cinegoers those days. It was one of the most talked about films, may be because of its special effect scenes.
