Most of the people other than the die hard connoisseurs of filmy and non-filmy music, may not be aware that Sachin Dev Burman (S D Burman) started his musical career as a singer on All India Radio Calcutta (Kolkatta) in early 30s. During his early period of musical journey, he had sung many Bengali non-filmy songs some of them written by such distinguished personalities like Jasimuddin and Kazi Nazrul Islam. I was pleasantly surprised to know that he had also rendered Hindustani classical thumris like preet mein huye badnaam in concerts at Allahabad and Calcutta.

The regular visitors to this blog must have noticed that we are seeing more Asha Bhosle songs posted in the blog nowadays than anybody else’s. The reason is that she is heading towards reaching a milestone figure of 1000 songs in the blog. I have been remiss in writing post of Asha Bhosle songs. Let me rectify this. The song I have chosen is my personal favourite. Asha Bhonsle’s solos from “Sujata” and “Bandini” under S D Burman, are a treasure which I knew from early days.

“Aarti” (1962) was one of the first (if not the first) movie of Rajshree Productions. It was directed by Phani Majumdar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala, Peace Kanwal, Jagirdar, Rajendranath, Vijaya Choudhry, Surekha, Niranjan Sharma, Ramesh Deo, Chandrima Bhaduri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it. That sounds like quite an impressive starcast, though quite a few of them were newcomers at that time.

“Anand Math”(1952) was a Filmistan production. It was directed by Hemen Gupta. Starcast of the movie included names viz. Prithviraj Kapoor, Ajit, Pradeep Kumar, S. L. Puri, Jankidas, Ranjana, Bharat Bhushan, Murad, Geeta Bali etc.
