Hullo to all Atulwaasis

Yesterday, 16thJune 2017, was the 97th birth anniversary of singer- music director-producer-director Hemant Mukherjee alias Hemant Kumar. He started out his music journey in 1935 on All India Radio with “Amar Ganete Ele Nabarupi Chirantanii” under the influence of his friend Subhas Mukhopadhayay. Hemant Da’s music career was primarily mentored by the Bengali musician, Sailesh Duttagupta. In his early life Hemant Da used to follow the famous Bengali singer Pankaj Mullick. For this he was nicknamed as “Chhoto Pankaj”. In an interview on television in the early 1980s, Hemanta had mentioned that he had also received classical music training from Ustad Faiyaz Khan’s student Phanibhusan Banerjee.

Today, May 24, 2017 is the Remembrance Day of Bulo C Rani,  the music director and the singer who left this day 24 years ago under unfortunate circumstances. A contemporary of music directors like Anil Biswas, Ghulam Haider, Naushad, C Ramchandra and Khemchand  Prakash, it is a sad commentary on Hindi film industry that Bulo C Rani could not attain the stature of these music directors. And this is despite the fact that he was associated with the Hindi film industry for over 2 decades and had churned out some immortal compositions.

The movie title “Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan”(1957) was clearly inspired from the iconic song of “Nastik”(1954) with this mukhda.

“Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan”(1957) was directed by I S Johar for Modern Theatre, Bombay. The movie had Ajit, Nalini Jaywant, I S Johar, Kamaljeet, Uday Laxmi, Shanti, Harbans Lal, Saroja, Anil Dutta etc in it. Inbcidentally, I S Johar was the director of “Nastik”(1954) as well. Ajit, Nalini Jaywant and I S Johar were there is “Nastik” (1954) as well. So it appears that this movie was inspired by “Nastik” (1954) in more ways than one.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 34
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

“वो चाँद सा चेहरा लिए, छत पर तेरा आना

tu raat khadi thi chhat pe
nee main samjha ke chaand nikla

There is something so uniquely desi about this romantic element – ‘chhat pe’ – ‘on the rooftop’ scenario. If it were the western milieu, the thought would be to go as far as the balcony; the scenario being Juliet present at the balcony and Romeo serenading her from the garden below. No where the western writer has thought of ascending to the terrace, bring in the soubriquet of the moon, and then let the verse take over from there. On the subcontinent, so much romance seems to have happened on the terrace, in the pages of prose and in the lines of verse.
