5349 Post No. : 17540

Today’s song is from a film of the Golden Era-Sandesh-1952.

This film was made by Sandesh pictures and its producer’s name was also Sandesh Adhikari. Luckily, the director was not any Sandesh. It was Bal Gajbar, a director not known in Hindi cinema, but he was a celebrated director in Marathi films. he did only 3 films in Hindi as a director namely, Mere Laal-1948, Sandesh-1952 and Gokul ka Raja-1954….his last film in Hindi. It’s Marathi original was Gokulcha Raja ( गोकुळचा राजा ) made in 1950, which was also directed by Bal Gajbar only.

There were 8 songs in the film, written by Manohar khanna (father of Music Director Usha khanna), Nihal Chand Jain-strangely called Nihal Uzanavi. The third lyricist was Kumud Tripathi, the well known comedian. He was one of those who came to the film industry to become a Lyricist but ended up being a reasonably successful comedian and a character artiste. He started as a Lyricist for the film Rimjhim-1949 and then wrote songs for Bijli-1950. He wrote 2 songs for the film Nai Zindagi-1951. During this film he attended one song filming. The director Mohan Sinha offered him a small comedy role in that film. This became his Debut if films as an actor. Though he wrote songs for film Sandesh-52, his career as a comedian had kickstarted. He last wrote songs for the film Jeevan Sathi-1957. Offhand I remember another 2 comedians who started as Lyricists but ended as Comedians namely, Mirza Musharraf and Kanhaiyalal Chaturvedi. Actors like Sajjan and Mahipal also started as Lyricists before becoming heros.

During his struggling days in the early 50s, Kumud Tripathi was staying in Bandra’s slums along with Sunil Dutt and Rajendra kumar. He acted in 73 films. His first film as an actor was Nai Zindagi-1951 and his last film was Hum se badhkar kaun-98. His one role I remember is from the film Apradhi Kaun-57, in which he had sung two songs also on the screen. After retirement from the films, he joined TV and did a memorable role as Guptaji ( owner of a Gen. Store) in a famous serial of the 1986 period- Nukkad.

The cast of the film was Durga Khote, Umesh Sharma, Kumud lele, Nana palashikar, Lalita Pawar etc.etc. The story of the film Sandesh-1952 was….SANDESH-1952 was a story of a doctor with distorted principles. Dinanath’s father Vidyadhar,an honest and straightforward School teacher is falsely implicated in cases of treason and mutiny against the British and is convicted in 1922. This shock takes Vidyadhar’s life.
Dinanath and his mother go to Kashinath, who was a favourite student of Vidyadhar, for help. Kashinath promises Dinanath that he will make him a doctor. During his education,Dinanath falls in love with a rich Barrister’s daughter Sudha, but their marriage can not take place as Dinanath is very poor. She gets married to his classmate.
Dinanath goes to England and when he comes back as a Doctor,he becomes only money minded,as he realises the value of money in this world. Due to his nature, his mother Saraswati bai leaves him.
One day,his mother meets with an accident and is brought to his Hospital, but she refuses to be treated by him. He realises that relations are more important than money and a Doctor’s profession is a noble one.
He repents and changes himself. Meanwhile,Sudha gets a divorce and they meet again and unite, finally.
The Hero of the film was Umesh Sharma, who acted in Deepak-51 and Apna desh-49 also as a Hero. Later he worked in many other roles,as well as as a writer, director and producer also. He acted in 33 films. He was the writer of the famous film BOMBAY-1995.

The Music Director was S.Purushottam, about whom not much is known. Similarly his assistant for this film was Shyamrao Kamble, who later became a very well known Arranger in Hindi films. He too has not received any publicity like other Arrangers- Anthony Gonsalvez, Sebastian D’souza, Chick Chocolate, Chriss Perry, Frank Fernando etc.

LUCK plays an important role in our film industry. It is this Luck which has built bright careers and it is this Luck that has brought down people’s careers.

It was a matter of Luck that Devika Rani chose the hesitant, shy and simple Ashok Kumar as her hero in films, otherwise he would have, at the most, become a Cinematographer or a senior Lab Technician in the Photography department of Bombay Talkies ! It was a matter of sheer luck that Khan Mastana was the Main singer in Rafiq Ghazanavi’s Laila Majnu, and a shy aspirant Mohd Rafi was a part of Chorus and later in K Asif’s Laila Majnu, Mohd.Rafi was the Main singer and the poor Khan Mastana was in the chorus !

It was luck that the immensely popular master Nissar made the Governor of Bombay to stop and give way to the sea of Nissar’s admirers and fans and it was the same luck that a tattered, poor master Nissar died in Penury and anonymity in the bylanes of Kamathipura when his last rites were done through charities. The unprecedented record breaking popularity of ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ was nothing short of a miracle and good luck to the hapless producer who was totally broke. Was it not Luck that made Pt. Hanuman Prasad listen to Geeta Dutt, without her knowledge and then brings her to the Films ?

The Hindi film industry is full of stories of luck. Thousands of people work in the industry, in different departments, but only a few get mentioned like say Cinematographer. What about his assistants who contribute equally, if not more to film shooting ?

Music Directors’ names are famous. At times their assistants too get a mention in the credits, but what about the soul of every song-the Arranger ? Many people do not even know that there is someone called an Arranger. An Arranger not only exists, but without him the song orchestration is not possible.

How many Arrangers are known to the public in India ? A composer is Zero without an Arranger. So they try to employ the best of them in their service. Some of the Arrangers become successful Composers themselves, like Sonik-Omi or Laxmikant Pyarelal. Most arrangers fail as composers because they don’t know the commercial aspect of composition, like getting films, knowing and mixing with film personalities in Parties, having friends and God fathers in the right place etc etc.

The other day I was reading a book “Voh Bhooli Dastaan” by Subhash Chandra Jadhav,on Indian Film Music. In this book he has described information about one such successful but totally unknown Arranger SHYAMRAO KAMBLE.

Kamble was born in Karad, near Kolhapur in Maharashtra, on 23-10-1925. His elder brother taught him Tabla and Pakhawaj. Kamble joined a musical drama company where he learnt writing notations. When he came to Bombay he accompanied great singers like Saraswati Rane, Suresh Haldankar, Manik Verma etc. He used to make rounds of film studios and learnt to play Piano, Saxophone, trumpet, mandolin etc.

His career started as an assistant to music director H N Sharma.

Then he worked for Roshan in Bawre nain, wherein he played harmonium in all songs and Roshan was pleased. In Bheegi Raat-65 he played Guitar in the song ‘Dil jo na kah saka’

While doing Anokhi Raat he made use of Flute artistically in ‘oh re taal mile’. During this film Roshan died and he helped his wife to complete the recording of ‘Sapnon ka raja’ by Lata.

Chitralekha’s background music was liked by Hemant kumar very much.

After Roshan, Kamble worked for his son Rajesh Roshan also.

Kamble says,“Though my work was appreciated, my name never appeared in film credits till Jaidev and Sudhir Phadke insisted for it.”

From ‘Mujhe jeene do’-63 Kamble became Jaidev’s assistant. He says,’ Jaidev ji was a composer totally sold to indian classical music.’ For Reshma and Shera Kamble used Sarod effectively.

The producer director of Gharonda,Bheem Sen insisted its music to be like R D Burman. Kamble used the interludes in every song just like RDB and songs of Gharonda became very famous. Jaidev was so happy that he gave a 5 speaker gramophone to him as a Gift.

In the film ‘Tumhaare Liye’ Kamble wanted Hariprasad Chaurasiya to play Flute. He discussed it with Hari ji, but Hari ji did not come for any rehearsals, so Kamble called Sumant Raj and did the rehearsals. As luck would have it,on the day of recording Hariprasad came to play Flute. Kamble did not hesitate in making his decision. He used both the flutists for different pieces in the song.

Kamble also worked with Sudhir Phadke. when a producer wanted to make a remake of marathi film ‘Vahininchya Bangdya”, he took Sudhir Phadke for Bhabhi ki choodiyan as a composer, but put a condition that his Arranger will work with him. That person was a Goanese and Phadke did not like his arrangement with western instruments for this emotional film. He called Kamble and asked him to write notations for all the songs on the tunes decided already. Kamble did all this and left. Phadke gave the notations to the Goanese arranger and asked him to arrange orchestration accordingly. That is why all the songs of this film including ‘Jyoti kalash chamke” became popular.

Shyamrao Kamble did not attempt to become a film composer himself, as he knew his limitations. However, for “Bibal-My Brother”-1975, he shared the music with Prabhakar Jog.

Shamrao himself was a brilliant composer as well. He used to compose Bhajans and once on listening to the Bhajans he composed, music director Pyarelal asked him “Shamraoji if you can compose the tunes so nicely, why don’t you think to be a full-fledged music director for films ?” He just said “I am more interested in the Music Arrangements..” Pyarelal asked him jokingly, “so shall I use your compositions ?” smiling, within a second he said, “Pyareji, my all work is for you… you may use it whenever you wish..!” I am very much sure that if Shamraoji had taken music-direction as a career, he would have definitely achieved the position in the list of most talented and successful composers in the Indian music field,” said Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, the ace music director.
“His knowledge and devotion towards music was so deep, that he even used to guide or suggest the top artists like Rais Khan (sitar), Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute), Shivkumar Sharma (santoor) about the playing during the recordings. He also used to express that a particular music piece would be more effective if improvised in a different manner etc. And the greatness of those artists also, who used to sportingly accept Shamraoji’s suggestions and appreciate the same.. This was only because they were fully aware of Shamraoji’s knowledge and capacity. And also this was the reason that we had given total freedom to him in our work also,” said Pyarelal.

In his early career, Shamrao had worked as a notation-writer. He was the one who wrote down the notation for Dinanath Mangeshkar’s natya sangeet (Chandrika hi janu, Vilopale madhu meelanat ya, Yuwati mana etc).

Though he retired and settled in Poona, Laxmikant Pyarelal always called him for work. He has toured several countries with Laxmikant Pyarelal’s orchestra as an Arranger. Shamrao kamble died on 17-10-2008, at Dombivali, due to Brain Haemorrhage, at the age of 83 years.

The tribe of Arrangers always worked behind the curtain, without any limelight on them and without appearing in film credits.

Truly, they are the brains behind good music in films ! (Thanks to Subhashandra Jadhav of ‘Voh bhooli Dastaan’ and Imprints and images, with thanks.)

Let us now enjoy the song by the classical singer Manik Verma. She sang only 17 songs in 13 Hindi films. Today’s song was her last song in Hindi films.

5307 Post No. : 17396

Today (28 January 2023) is the 16th remembrance day of O P Nayyar (16 January 1926 – 28 January 2007). He ruled the roost in HFM during 1950s and 1960s, and that too on his own terms. Imagine not using the voice of Lata Mangeshkar in his songs and still managing to create great songs. Curiously, he found his playback singer of choice in Lata Mangeshkar’s family itself, in the form of her younger sinter Asha Bhonsle. There is no doubt that it was O P Nayyar who offered Asha Bhonsle the opportunity to become a playback singer second only to her illustrious elder sister.

This association of Asha Bhonsle and O P Nayyar lasted nearly two years before they had an acrimonious break up.

We as music lovers are more interested in music and less on the personal affairs of those creating them. As far as O P Nayyar is concerned, he worked in 73 movies (give or take a few). As many as 50 of his movies, including almost all of his movies of 1950s and 1960s have already been YIPPEED in the blog. The few unYIPPEED movies of those decades are unYIPPEED because the balance songs are unavailable.

So we have to movies in the later part of O P Nayyar’s career, if we want to discuss songs composed by him.

“Aisa Bhi Hota Hai”(1971) is one of his less known movie. It was produced and directed by Kamran, a B grade movie maker (Father of Farah and Sajid Khan) for Rainbow Films, Bombay. The movie had Dev Mukherji, Nandita Bose (making debut), Jalal Agha, Rupesh Kumar, Anwar Ali, Nikita, Tiwari, Sunder, Mohan Choti, Shyam Kumar, Randhir, Anjum, Birbal, Maruti, Tuntun, Mumtaz Begum, Shefali, Raj Rani, Mehboob, Jayshree T etc in it.

The movie flopped and so the songs of this movie had no change to get popular because they were not heard by most music lovers.

“Aisa Bhi Hota Hai”(1971) had four songs in it. One song has been covered in the blog.

As a tribute of O P Nayyar, here is the second sonng from “Aisa Bhi Hota Hai”(1971) to appear in the blog.

The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. S H Bihari is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P nayyar of course.

It is a sweet song to listen to. The song sounds like the songs she sang under O P Nayyar’s baton during those years.

Only audio of the song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

This song is the 500th song of OP Nayyar in the blog as a music director. This is the final century of O P Nayyar seeing that O P Nayyar composed around 570 songs in all. That means we are within striking distance of covering all available O P Nayyar compositions in the blog.

We take this oppotunity to play our tribute to the legendary music director O P Nayyar.

Song-Chaand raaton ko nikle na nikle (Aisa Bhi Hota Hai)(1971) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-S H Bihari, MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

chaand raaton ko nikle na nikle
chaand raaton ko nikle na nikle
din mein sooraj na chamke to kya hai
apne chhote se ghar mein ujaala
ab sada ke liye ho gaya hai
chaand raaton ko nikle na nikle
din mein sooraj na chamke to kya hai
lalalalla
lalalarlala
lalalalla

ek hansi iski hai saari duniya meri
ek muskaan sau saal ki zindagi
mujhko duniya mein ab aur kya chaahiye
mil gayi hai zamaane ki saari khushi
maine barson jo dekha thha sapna
aaj kismat se poora hua hai
apne chhote se ghar mein ujaala
ab sada ke liye ho gaya hai
chaand raaton ko nikle na nikle
din mein sooraj na chamke to kya hai
lalalalla
lalalarlala
lalalalla

har ghadi har samay muskuraata hua
phool sa bachpana meri baahon mein ho
laal mera bada hoke jaaye jahaan
kaamyaabi sada iski raahon mein ho
door har dum rahe gham ke saye
ye hamesha hi meri dua hai
apne chhote se ghar mein ujaala
ab sada ke liye ho gaya hai
chaand raaton ko nikle na nikle
din mein sooraj na chamke to kya hai
lalalalla
lalalarlala
lalalalla
lalalalla
lalalarlala

5288 Post No. : 17321

This new year 2023 has seen lots and lots of debutant movies being introduced to the blog. as many as seven movies made their debuts in the blog in this new year. One of the movies had just one song in it. So its debut coincided with its getting YIPPEED as well. We did not have a “proper” YIPpying of the movie so far.

To make up for that, here is the first “proper” Yippying occasion in the blog in 2023. The movie getting YIPPEED is “Basant”(1960).

“Basant”(1960) was produced and directed by Bibhuti Mitra for Mitra Productions Bombay. The movie had Nutan, Shammi Kapoor, Minoo Mumtaz,Kammoo,Cuckoo(guest artiste), Murad, Vittaldas Panchotia, Jagadish Kamal, Gyani, Rajendar, V.Namade, Rawley, ShyamLal And Johnny Walker in it.

This movie was not an original movie. It drew heavily from earlier movies which in turn drew heavily from yet other movies. The movie was a mixture of “Safar”(1946) and “Shabnam”(1949), which were hit movies made by Bibhuti Mitra in the past taking inspiration from Hollywood movies “It happened one night”(1934) and “Love Affair”(1939), later remade as “An Affair to remember”(1957).

Great Memsaab, when she was actively reviewing Hindi movies, had posted a long and funny review of this movie.

An excerpt, which was earlier quoted while discussing this movie, is quoted here again:-

“Take the plot of It Happened One Night, sprinkle in some ingredients from An Affair To Remember, then stir in a third plot which is completely nuts, and voila! it’s Basant. Two of my favorite Hollywood films and some masala craziness for the price of one Hindi film! Sure, there are huge plot holes and it’s nonsensical at times, but what do I care—especially when the hero and heroine are my beloved Shammi Kapoor and beautiful Nutan. They are great together: his nonchalant silliness complements her feisty character perfectly.
Plus, there’s Pran! and lovely music from OP Nayyar.

Meenakshi Rai (Nutan) is the spoiled daughter of millionaire Rai Bahadur (Murad). We know that she’s a modern girl because she wears trousers and says “My foot!” a lot. She wants to marry Rajesh (Pran), a man of whom her father disapproves strongly.

Her father is escorting her to Calcutta by train to get her away from Rajesh, but she disembarks at another stop in the middle of the night as he is sleeping. Her bag is stolen on the platform by a scoundrel named Billoo (Johnny Walker) and she chases him to a nearby fairground, where she recovers her bag but discovers that her father already has the police after her.

To escape them, she takes to the stage and sings a lovely song (“Raaste Mein”) with a guy named Ashim (Shammi Kapoor). But when she returns to the train station to catch the Bombay train, it’s crawling with police and her father is there! So is Ashim, who has figured out who she is; he’s traveling to Bombay as well.

She decides to take the bus instead and sits next to Billoo—who steals all the money from her purse when she isn’t looking. For some reason never explained, Ashim is on the bus too, and sees a police roadblock ahead. He pushes Billoo aside and saves her from detection.

They enact a hilarious drama of a possessive husband and his shrewish wife, and the policeman flees to avoid getting involved. Shammi and Nutan are really fun to watch as he continues to needle her (and imitates her “My foot!” at every opportunity), and she gives it back to him as good as she gets.

To escape further notice, Meenakshi and Ashim take to the side roads. When Billoo the con man sees a poster with her photo and a Rs 50,000 reward, he starts trailing them. There is a lot of other comic side plot action with Johnny, but I won’t go into it here. He is pretty funny, though.

As Meenakshi and Ashim head towards Bombay by whatever transport they can find, they argue a lot but are getting acquainted too. She tells him that she is headstrong because her father has always been so controlling, and she is longing for a little freedom. They are so CUTE together.

Back in Bombay, Rai Bahadur just wants his daughter back, and is even willing to compromise with Rajesh.

But Ashim and Meenakshi are falling in love.

So true! When the two reach her home in Bombay, she confesses her feelings to Ashim. He tells her to meet him after one month apart, as a test to make sure their love is true. This seemed like a bad idea in An Affair To Remember, and it seems like a bad idea now, but she happily agrees.

Unfortunately, Rajesh is waiting in the wings, and he needs her money. On Meenakshi’s birthday—which Ashim attends in disguise—Rai Bahadur announces her engagement to Rajesh, as promised. Ashim is furious and confronts her, but she reassures him that she loves him. Rajesh overhears them, and sends his thugs to kill Ashim when he goes on a trip to deliver a valuable necklace in this place (our lunatic third plot development):

On the night when they are to meet, Meenakshi has a car accident and is paralyzed from her waist down. Rai Bahadur dies of a heart attack when he hears the news. When she recovers enough to leave the hospital in a wheelchair, Rajesh tells her that Ashim is dead too.

Poor Meenakshi is bereft. Is Ashim really dead? If not, where is he? Did he show up for their rendezvous and think her absence meant she had decided to marry Rajesh? Will she marry Rajesh? Will she ever walk again?

Oh, the drama! The tears! The beauty of Shammi! “

Reading the above, we can realise that “Chori Chori”(1956) and “Dil Hai Ke Maanta Nahin”(1991) also used the same story.

Despite borrowing heavily from all time hit movies, “Basant”(1960) failed at the box office.

We are discussing songs of “Basant”(1960) so let us now coonfine us to songs. The movie had as many as 14 songs ! In a movie running around three hours, one third of time must have been taken by the songs themselves !

One notices that Asha Bhonsle’s voice figures in all 14 songs. It is easily a record for a singer to lend his/her voice in each and every song of a movie where the song count is so high.

The movie had as many as 10 Rafi-Asha Bhonsle duets. Easily a record in a movie for a duet singing pair. In addition, they figured in another song, that also had the voice of S D Batish.

O P Nayyar, the music director, clearly belived in one size fits all policy. All male actors lip synced in Rafi’s voice. All female actors lip synced in Asha Bhonsle’s voice. It the process, Asha Bhonsle lent her voice to Nutan, Kammo and Minu Mumtaz in different songs ! Video of four songs are not available, so who knows, she may have lent her voice to some more female actors in the movie. If all videos were available, then I would not be surprised to find that Johny Walker and Kammo had more songs picturised on them in the movie than Shammi Kapoor and Nutan !

As discussed above, the movie had 14 songs in it. 13 songs have already been covered.
Here is the list of the 13 songs that have been covered in the blog so far:-

We can see that this movie had a very long and eventful stay in the blog. The songs of this movie have been discussed not only by me, but also by Sudhir Jee, Arunkumar Deshmukh jee and nahm jee. We have discussed quite a few topics, while covering these songs, including introduction to some of our regulars.

Finally the movie gets YIPPEED in the blog with its 14th and final song. This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and chorus. It is picturised on Minu Mumtaz and others.

Qamar Jalalabadi, whose remembrance day falls today, is the lyricist of the song. So this song serves as a tribute to him.

O P Nayyar is the music director of course.

Most of our posts these days appear in the early morning. But this song is about “Raat chaandni”, so postig it in the morning would have appeared inappropriate. so I am posting this song, when it is night. It is not quite “chaandni raat”(full moon night), that day was three days ago on 6 january 2023), but the moon is still full enough to be able to shed its chaandni tonight. So the setting for the song is appropriate enough.

So here is this 14th and final song from “Basant”(1960). Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

With this song, all the songs of “Basant”(1960) get covered in the blog and the movie thus joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

Hullo Atuldom

“Sohni Mahiwal” (1984) was a Indo-Russian historical romance drama film based on the story of ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ – one of the four popular tragic love stories of Punjab & Sindh region; the other three being Sassi Punnun, Mirza Sahiban, & Heer Ranjha; I am sure there may be more such stories in folklore.
“Sohni Mahiwal” has been made by the Hindi film industry a few times- songs from the 1946 and 1958 versions are there on the blog. I have read somewhere that in 1977 BR Films had announced a Punjabi version too with Rajesh Khanna and Neetu Singh in the lead, it never reached completion.

The 1984 version was produced by F.C. Mehra and directed by Umesh Mehra & Latif Faiziyev. This was the second collaboration of the Mehras with the Russians after “Alibaba aur 40 Chor” (1980). At the insistence of the Russians a special role was created for Zeenat Aman- they had liked her in ‘Alibaba aur 40 Chor’. This was one of Anu Malik’s (the music director for this film) earliest major film.
Sunny Deol and Poonam Dhillon played the star-crossed lovers- this was Sunny Deol’s second film, he was shooting for this when ‘Betaab’ released. Pran, Tanuja, Gulshan Grover, Rakesh Bedi, alongwith a few Russian actors formed the rest of the cast. Shammi Kapoor (a friend of F.C. Mehra) had a tiny guest role and Zeenat Aman was in a supporting role of Zarina the Bandit.

“Hare Rama Hare Krishna” released in January of 1971 i.e. 51 years ago. Pre-production and related activities may have started atleast a year or two earlier i.e. sometime in 1969 or 1970- 52/53 years back. That means our today’s birthday girl has been around in the industry for close to 53 years- unbelievable. Prior to that she was a model who went on to participate in the Femina Miss India contest and on winning there represented India at the Miss Asia- Pacific beauty pageant and winning that title too.

‘Zeenat Aman’ a name that is associated with roles that were different from what the heroines of that era played. It is not as if she didn’t play roles of Saree-clad ladies but most of them were not the wimpy-weepy types. She was most sought after for roles of ladies who were more modern in their looks and thinking. She was a trend setter who didn’t shy away from flaunting her well looked after appearance.
Today when she is turning an year older we shall see her in this dance number from “Sohni Mahiwal” singing an Anand Bakshi written song which was play-backed by Asha Bhonsle. This dance is to help Mahiwal reach the marriage venue of Sohni’s wedding and help the lovers unite. That is Zarina the bandit has a heart of gold.

Wishing Zeenie Baby (as she used to be called fondly) all health and cheer.

The recent months have been very different for me as I was going through many things including many thoughts going through my mind. (I will be trying to put them in my write-ups and present them in future on the blog.).

There was a busy work schedule at work whole of July-August as we shifted the whole warehouse from one place to another (around 10 kms from original location). Thereafter it was getting settled at new location and matching the speed with the requirements of Production in the factory. Add to this the daily travel to reach the workplace and coming back to home. I was not getting into the right mood of writing.

And that is the reason I was less active on the blog. But I was never away from listening music and even watching movies in theaters. I had always loved watching movies in theaters and it gives me immense pleasure. So far in the recent one month I have watched four movies in the theaters. I enjoyed all of them.
On the other hand I was getting my daily dose of listening radio especially Vividh Bharati on FM every morning and evening on my way to office and back.

There have been many songs which I get to listen on radio for the first time and in many cases I always wish that I would present them on the blog. But as the days passed I tend to forget the songs listened. The program in the evening, which I listened to most, plays non-stop Hindi song and doesn’t mention the movie-name the songs are from. So over the period, it slips and after few months I get reminded of such songs again or even the songs get played on after a long gap in the same program.

Today’s song is one such song which I had first listened almost more than one and half-year back. I had then thought to present this on the blog. Because this song is a very nice song or rather a gem of a song but not much heard, may be because it is not from the golden period of Hindi songs.

This song is from the film ‘Maashuka’ (1987).

‘Maashuka’ was directed by Arati Bhattacharya for Harshavardhan Films.

She had also written the story of this movie. (Aarti Bhattacharya was a Bengali actress who also worked in Bhojpuri and Hindi movies as actress, script writer and director. From the information given on her wiki page I guess that the actor in his movie Kunaal is the same person whom she married, and who also was an Bhojpuri actor. There is information available on Aarti Bhattacharya on internet which needs to be compiled in detail for presentation).

The film was produced by Rajiv Ranjan Singh. It had Kunaal, Moonmoon Sen, Arun Govil, and Zarina Wahab, with Shoma Anand. Sachin had a friendly appearance in this movie and then there was Amjad Khan above all of them. Paintal, Murli, Asha Sharma, Master Ravi, Bhagwan Sinha, Shivraj, Mukesh Kumar, Anwar, Fanu, Dharm Raj, Maharana, Ratan, Birender, Sushil Yadav, Master Akash, Gupta, Harisharan, S. Madan, Prabha Mishra and others. Pradeep Kumar also had a special appearance in this movie.

Dulal Dey was the screenplay writer and associate director of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Nawab Arzoo.
Editing of this film was done by Bibhuti Bhushan. S Tewari and RK Aroon had written the lyrics of the songs in this movie. Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar, Shabbir Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Manhar, Ratna Aroon, Subhash and Kunal have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by RK Aroon. This name is new for me and I am not aware much about this music director. Also there is very less information available about him.

This movie had total six songs. Today we listen to a song from this movie which is sung by Shabbir Kumar and penned by Shardanand Tewary.

I think both the lyricist and the music director will make their debut on the blog with the debut of this movie on the blog today.

Incidentally, when I remembered this song on 26th October and checked for biographical details of Shabbir Kumar it was his sixty-ninth birthday on that day. He was born on 26th October 1954.

We belatedly wish Shabbir Kumar a very happy birthday on the blog.

Shabbir Kumar has sung many songs in the eighties and nineties and I too like many of his songs which I would like to present here in follow-up posts.

For today, let us enjoy this wonderful song …

On screen, it is actor Kunaal lip-syncing the song and also seen in the picturisation of this song are Moonmoon Sen and Arun Govil.
