Ever so often, I go searching for a song, an obscure song from an obscure film. I do not know what I will find, because the film is unfamiliar and the songs are unheard. I just dive into the list of songs sitting in my hard drive, with apprehensions, knowing not what will be discovered. And almost always, when I return to surface, I am gasping for breath, not that I was not able breath while in the depths of my collection, but because of wonder and joy on having laid my hands on a fabulous gem of a song that I had not heard before. And going by the awareness factor and availability online, the same may be true for friends and readers who may quite well also be listening to such gems for the first time.

This was the heading of a full page advertisement issued by the producer G A Thakur, the owner of Girdhar Bahar Productions in October 1945 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. He was announcing his intention of producing ‘Rehana’ (1946), the story of which is based on the Middle-East background. So today (1 january 2015) heralds the arrival of a new year viz 2015. Many people try to go to a new year heralding get together parties but I did not share their enthusiasm and decided to keep indoors, considering the weather conditions. I feel that the weather conditions this time are colder and bleaker than they were the previous year and I feel that the advisable thing to do under the circumstances is to bid one’s time and hope that this kind of weather will go away in a few weeks.

Sometimes people end up giving really deep insights to you about yourself. But during the conversation, you do not grasp it and brush it off. This happened to me during my first jury at NID. First let me explain the concept of jury. Jury is what happens, when instead of exams, the college decides that a student should have only half an hour every semester to display every scrap of work they did for 4.5 months and justify that he/she did learn something. If one manages to do that, then they give you a decent grade and pass you for the semester. Nahi toh, Thakur toh giyo!

In 1952, this voice came to the fore with the rousing proclamation of “Vande Maatram, Vande Maatram”. This song, which comes from the seminal creation of Bankim Chandra Chatterji – ‘Anand Matth’, was first published in 1882. After the passing of the first war of independence in 1857, the undercurrents of anger and resistance were simmering across the country. But the voices of cohesive and decisive action were still to come a couple of decades later. With the publication of ‘Anand Mathh’, the nation and its people got a slogan that said everything in just two simple words. After this song came on the lips of the common man, over the years many musical interpretations have been pronounced. Most of them are based in classical music, and the most popular versions are gradual and lingering, in the mode of a prayer to the motherland.
