I thought that a woman getting drunk and singing a drunkard song in an Indian movie began only in 1960s, but I was wrong. This began in 1950s itself.

Here is one of the earliest drunkard songs from an Hindi movie. The movie is “Khazaanchi” (1941) and the song is “peene ke din aaye piye jaa”.

When one thinks about a drunkard going past a deserted street at night, then what Mukesh song appropriate to the occasion occurs to one’s mind ? Is it Zindagi khwaab hai (Jaagte Raho) ? This song was picturised on Motilal, who was a distant relative of Mukesh.

In Bollywood movies, getting drunk and singing drunkard song was considered the preserve of males (viz Devdas etc). Ladies getting drunk and making a spectacle of themselves was a strict no no.

“Bairaag” (1976) is one of the last movies where Dilip Kumar is seen as a hero. And as happened with heroes well past the conventionally accepted age of playing Bollywood heroes, he is paired up with Leena Chandawarkar here, who was nearly half the age of Dilip Saab at that time.

“Samundar” (1957) was a movie where Premnath had played lead role opposite Bina Rai, who later on became his wife. His brother Rajendranath also figured in this movie.

In Bollywood movies, it is just the hero who gets drunk. Ladies getting drunk is not considered a proper thing. So it comes as a big surprise to find both of them drunk and singing this drunkard song.
