He made his debut appearance as an extra child actor in BR Chopra’s ‘Afsaana’ (1951). His comic propensities became visible in another small role as a child actor in Bimal Roy’s ‘Do Beegha Zameen’. Then on to more noticeable child roles – ‘Laila Majnu’ (1953), the younger Kaif, playing the child version of Shammi Kapoor; ‘Footpath’ (1953), a young street smart pickpocket; the role of Elaichi in Guru Dutt’s ‘Aar Paar’ (1954); the child clown in ‘Munna’ (1954); the young Kishore Kumar in ‘Dhobi Doctor’ (1954); and ‘Railway Platform’ (1955), ‘Mr & Mrs 55’ (1955), ‘Kismet Ke Khel’ (1956), ‘Dhaake Ki Malmal’ (1956), and more. Then comes 1957 and two important films – ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’. Still the child actor, but gaining recognition with every role. The child actors’ team in ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’ was recognized and awarded by Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru.
