Sunday, 14th August 2011 brought us the sad news that Shammi Kapoor was no more. We knew that Shammi Kapoor needed dialysis three times a week and he was wheelchair bound for years, and that he was 79 years old, still this news that came as a shock.

Think of a music director from Punjab, preparing music for a film whose story is set in Bombay. And one of the songs is based on the local folk dance of Maharashtra. And guess what you will get? A Lavani based song spiced with exclamations of ‘haishaa’. And if you don’t believe me, well just go ahead and listen to this wonderful folk dance song from the 1957 film Miss Bombay. (NOTE: ‘haishaa’ is an exclamation that is used often in Punjabi folk songs.).

“Ek Sapera Ek Lutera” (1965) is a movie starring Feroz Khan and Kumkum. This is a B grade movie and like most B grade movies it had some awesome songs in it. The most well known song from this movie is Ham tumse judaa hoke mar jaayenge ro ro ke
Here is another song from this movie. I became aware of this song only just now and this song haq quickly grown up on me.

Vasant Desai had a fairly long stint of thirty plus years in the film industry, and yet his total assignments as a music director are less than fifty. It is said that he did not take up or did not get many assignments because of his style. His style is deeply rooted in the classical and folk traditions, and he maintained that style throughout his career. In the 60s and 70s, his assignments are few and far between, and yet, with each outing as a composer, he has left an indelible mark.

Mat bolo bahaar ki batiyaan re

While looking up information about Naushad, I found out that he made his debut as a music director in 1940 in a movie called “Prem Nagar”. In this movie he composed as many as 13 songs. Those are the days when actors themselves used to sing their own songs.

“Shaheed” (1965) was a movie based on Bhagat Singh’s life and most songs were patriotic songs. Even other songs of this movie evoke patriotic fervour, such is the feeling that this movie brings about in its listeners.
