I had a message from Atulji after he posted my last contribution: “Your next write-up will be your 200th. So, make that a special write-up. 🙂 ”. And my reaction was “oh maa”. I didn’t realise I had done 200 posts. I knew I was within touching distance of the double century but not just one run away. But then here it is and I must thank Atulji for posting 99% of all that I have written and sent him since 2012.

“Mere Hamsafar” (1970) was directed by Dulal Guha for Labela Films, Bombay. This movie had Sharmila Tagore, Jeetendra, Balraj Sahni, Jeevan, Laxmi Chhaya, Suresh, Shammi, Mohan, Sheri Prakash, Thoppa, Keshto Mukherjee, Sunder etc in it.

People who are experienced Hindi movie watchers will know that songs and dance play the same role in these movies as the term “black hole” plays in Astronomy. Wherever in doubt, introduce a song and dance (or a black hole) as the case may be and your target audience is satisfied. 🙂

In presenting this series, we are dealing with a very familiar era, when the radio was a prevalent medium and a big support to bring film songs to the listening public. More songs were heard, more songs got stored in the collective memory, and yes, compared to the earlier decades, a much larger percentage of films had their music released on gramophone records, and hence a much larger number of film songs are available. And yet, there are still a few films for which any audio or video material has not surfaced in the public domain. I will provide some statistics for 1961 and 1962, when I close the decade of 1962, three or four episodes hence.

Earlier in the morning today, I received an email. Antaraa Mondal, film journalist and a good friend, sent me a link. This link is for an interview of Majrooh Sultanpuri by Peeyush Sharma, originally recorded in 1993. And republished today. On the anniversary of his birth. I read through the interview. I find quite a bit of discussion of Majrooh Sb’s working with another stalwart, music director SD Burman. Quite a coincidence that it is the birth anniversary of Burman Dada also today.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 23

‘Aankhen’ was released in 1950. Most people remember it for being the debut film of music director Madan Mohan. Amongst all the wonderful songs that caught the attention of the listeners, there is this lovely melody in the voice of Meena Kapoor, that really steals away your heart – “Mori Atariya Pe Kaaga Bole, Mora Jiya Doley, Koi Aa Rahaa Hai”. For me, it is this one song that makes this film and its music memorable. This is one of the two songs that Bharat Vyas wrote for this film.

The year 1954 was a mixed treat for the film industry. The trend of movies on Detective or crime themes began this year,starting with Aar paar and Taxi Driver. Filmistan was the most successful production house with two superhit films having popular music from composer Hemant kumar. Naagin and Jaagriti were the films. Bimal Roy made three films- Naukari,Biraj bahu and Baap Beti ( based on Guy De Maupassant’s Simon’s Papa). H S Rawail made Mastana based on Chaplin’s The Kid.

Hindi movie music was predominanatly based on classical music during the first decade (viz 1930s). It was in early 1940s that Ghulam Haider introduced Punjabi Folk music based songs in “Khazaanchi” (1941). This paradigm shift was avidly lapped up by public and this paved the way for folk music based songs in Hindi movies. Ghulam Haider was followed by Naushad who introdced UP folk music in his compositions. That opened the floodgates and then we had different music directors composing songs based on folk music from different regions.
