Today’s song is from the film Subah ka tara-54, a Rajkamal film by V. Shantaram.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 13

‘घ’
“घर से तो कट चुका पत्ता”

As I search for songs of Rafi Sb, I continue to find unheard and obscure gems, that make one wonder – where have these songs been hiding so far. And more importantly, continue to marvel more and more at the versatility of Rafi Sb’s voice and the depth of his emotional connect with the intent of the song. When I picked out this song and heard it, the one word that flashed in my mind was ‘free spirit’. This song is meant to be a freewheeling song of a wanderer, who has no roots. As the song progresses, the mind catches the attention of the feeling of lightness one experiences, as the sounds of Rafi Sb’s voice sink into the mind. The sound is coming almost as if from the skies, light as the wind. It carries a plucky feeling of a carefree heart that is joyous in its rootlessness. I am so enchanted by the emotional expression in this song that today I actually went ahead and created a new category – ‘Free Spirit Song’.

‘ग’
“गरज़ हो तो नखरे दिखाती है बीवी”

The voice of Rafi Sb has played in the back for umpteen actors, all the way from mid 1940s the 1980s. But there are two actors who screen performances have a very special connection with Rafi Sb. Not difficult to guess, I am sure. Yes, Shammi Kapoor is one, and Johnny Walker is the second.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘ए’
“एक एक एक, एक चाय की प्याली”

This song will definitely remind you of another very popular Rafi solo song. No prizes for guessing; the similarity of rendition of the first line is a dead giveaway. Yes, you will recognize the song immediately. Both songs are equally fast paced. however, after the first line, the similarity ends. The other song has already been identified as a Johnny Walker song, based on information provided in comments by one of our readers. My strong hunch is that even this song should be a Johnny Walker song. His name appears in the cast of actors of this film.

‘इ’
“इधर भी हसीना, उधर भी हसीना “

There is one name, and one person, in the immediate family of the child Mohammed Rafi, that probably gets mentioned in the margin lines of the story of his early years. However, this person was instrumental, and played a most significant role in recognizing the talent of this child, and endeavored to provide him opportunities for listening to and learning from some of the greatest masters of that time. The name is Hamid and he was the elder brother to Mohammed Rafi.

Mukesh and his Composers – 9

“Houston, we have a problem.”

This famous quote from the Hollywood film ‘Apollo 13’ (1995) pertains to the problem on board NASA’s unsuccessful mission to the moon. Though there is a different version to the line from NASA’s actual transcript, the phrase has now become part of everyday language for reporting any kind of problem.

Today (1 october 2015) is the 109th birth anniversary of S D Burman (1 October 1906 – 31 October 1975).

SD Burman was a well established and well respected music director by the time I became aware of his name (sometime in late 1960s). But like everyone else, he too made his debut sometime. It is difficult to imagine it today, but his earlier career was full of struggles and his career as a music director in Hindi movies was almost a non starter. He was given his initial breaks in 1940s by Sasadhar Mukherjee of Filmistan who signed him up for “Aath Din”(1946) and “Shikaari”(1946). The music of these two movies did not create much impression at that time. It was his next movie with Filmistan, namely “Do Bhai”(1947) that helped SD Burman get some foothold in the industry. He kept scoring music for the subsequent movies of Filmistan.

Genius of Jaidev – 27
———————————-

Jaidev had tried a number of humorous songs in his first film ‘Joru Ka Bhai’ (1955). In fact, the theme song ‘Saari Khudaayee Ek Taraf’ with S Balbir and S D Batish, and ‘Dharam Par Mar Jaana Koi Badi Baat Nahin Hai’ with Kishore Kumar and S Balbir, set both these qawaalli type songs in the humorous mood that the situation may have demanded.

Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan – 7

As of the last episode, my tale of habitation in Bombay (in the post “Bambai Shehar Ki Tujhko Chal Sair Karaa Doon”) was put on hold at the Pali Hill guest house of the Tatas.  With this post now, I pick up the threads and move ahead with that story.

         Bombay Gangout – Part 5
         The Day After.

The next day to the gangout meeting, we had plans for a visit to our dear Arun ji. As the readers may be aware, Arun ji had not attended the gangout meeting. The personal family circumstances in the recent past, had been exigent to the extreme.  His life partner had passed away just 10 days prior to the scheduled meeting. We had decided to go ahead with the meeting, sans his participation.
