Geeta Dutt was one of the few singers who got a godsend opportunity as a playback singer in Hindi films. The devdoot or farishta (angel) in her case was none other than Pandit Hanuman Prasad, one of the music director of the 40s. While walking on a Mumbai street, he heard a singing voice coming from the balcony of the building above him which attracted his attention. He straightway walked into the room and found a teenage girl singing. She was Geeta Roy as she was known then. He liked her singing so much that he offered her the chance to sing a predominantly chorus song in the film ‘Bhakt Prahlad (1946) in which she had two lines to sing. These two lines from the song attracted the attention of S D Burman who persuaded her parents to let her sing in ‘Do Bhai’ (1947). The iconic song “mera sundar sapna beet gaya” and the box office success of the film signalled the arrival of Geeta Roy as a playback singer. By the end of 40s, she had already attained the status of one of the prominent female playback singers of Hindi films.

The movie had Ranjan, Nigar Sultana, Kumkum, Helen, Kamal Kapoor, Chaman Puri, Maruti Rao, Tiwari, Ram Mohan, Manjeet, Kailash Kumari, Rana, Saroj, Krupal, Gaurang, Ramesh Tiwari etc in it.

“Commander” (1959) was an obscure movie produced by M Usman Nadiadwala under the banner of Meher movies. It was directed by Kedar Kapoor and it had Ranjan, Nigar Sultana, Kumkum, Helen, Kamal Kapoor, Chaman Puri, Maruti Rao, Tiwari, Ram Mohan, Manjeet, Kailash Kumari, Rana, Saroj, Krupal, Gaurang, Ramesh Tiwari etc in it.

“Zimbo Comes To town” (1960) was a Combine Films Theatre Production. It was produced by Homi Wadia and directed by Nanabhai Bhatt. The movie had Chitra, Azad, Bhagwan, Shammi, Nilofar, Habeeb, Dalpat, Bismillah, Mittu Miyan, M. K. Hasan, Geeta, Julian, Korega, Yadav, Ratan, Raman Joshi, Pedro aka Manav Chimpazi etc in it.

When I saw the lyrics of this song from “Jogan” (1950), I thought that this song was discussed long back, but when I checked the list of songs of “Jogan” (1950) appearing in the blog, this song was missing much to my surprise. Then I realised that the song that I was confusing it with was the song Ae ri main to prem deewaani mera dard na jaane koye from “Naubahaar” (1952).
