Today, November 6th is the 40th Remembrance Day of Sanjeev Kaumar, (09/07/1938 – 06/11/1985), one of the most versatile actors of Hindi films and the two-time National Award winner. He was popularly known as Haribhai among his close friends which was derived from his real name, Harihar Jariwala. He was the first one from his family to step into the films on the basis of his talents, eventually becoming an icon of Hindi cinema. I have watched his performances in films for the first time in ‘Shikaar’ (1968) in the role of a calm and calculated police inspector followed by ‘Jyoti’ (1969) in a lead role. I was impressed with his performances in these two films which appeared different from his other contemporary actors.

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————————

Today’s song is a rare song, but it surely deserved to be a well-known song, but it was not destined to be so, seeing that the movie it was meant to belong to could not be released. The title of this movie is ‘Hamaari Kahaani’ from the decade of 1970s. Sources have mentioned the year of this movie as 1973.

‘Hamaari Kahaani’ or ‘Hamaari Kahaanee-1973’ was directed by B.V. Algikar for ‘Navprakash Chitra, Bombay’. Geet Kosh Vol-V mentions the cast of this movie as Master Shripad, Baby Ragini, Master Vinayak, Master Kiran, Sulochana, Abhi Bhattacharya, Dhoomal and others. The movie page for this movie lists three songs for this movie, leaving space for possibility of more songs in this movie. Two songs are written by Asad Bhopali, and one song is written by Jaan Nisar Akhtar. Music for this movie is composed by C. Arjun. The singers for this movie are Usha Mangeshar, Manna Dey and Mohd Rafi.

Today’s song is from an 85 year old film- Paak Daman-1940.

The year 1940 was the end of the first decade of Talkie films. From 1931 to 1939 most of the film music was made and sung by people who were experts in Classical Music. Classical music has never been the area of common people. It was born in Temples and nurtured in the Darbars of Kings and Nawabs. When film music relied heavily on classical mode, it became an imposition on the masses. Luckily, from the last 2 years of the 30’s, film music started changing and the emphasis shifted to traditional and Folk tunes over the classical.

Today’s song is from the film Sangam-1954.

There were 3 films with this title, made in 1941, 1954 and 1964. The 1964 film is known to all as it had all top stars of that time, in lead roles and a Raj Kapoor touch. The 1941 film was a bilingual film , in Marathi and Hindi, made by Navyug Pictures, owned by the famous Marathi writer Acharya Atre and Master Vinayak.

Today’s song is from the film Adab Arz-1943.

It is one of those films, where you don’t find any connection between the film’s title and its story, even with a far-fetched imagination. This is what I call “Cheating” the audience. In the first instance you would feel that this is a story about a Muslim family. But no, it is not. Maybe the word ‘cheating’ is a harsh word, we can call it a misleading trick !

The film was made by Amar pictures, Bombay – which was started by Chimanlal Desai after Sagar Movietone closed and he also left National Studios. The film was one of the 8 films that his son-Virendra Desai – directed in his failed career. Music was provided to the 12 songs written by Rammurthy Chaturvedi, Kailash G Matwala and Pt. Indra, by Gyan Dutt who had recently left his long association with Ranjit Movietone. The cast of the film was Nalini Jayawant, Karan Dewan, Kamla Chaterjee, Ansari, Pratima Devi, Dulari, Mukesh, Nagendra M, M Kumar, and many others.

Today’s song is from a comedy film Chand Tara-1945.

1945 was the year when the devastating II World War ended and the film industry heaved a sigh of relief. Many irksome regulations were relaxed. There was no force now to make Propaganda films for war, no shortage of Raw Film and plenty of Finance available through black money, generated during the war times. However, the year saw only 73 Hindi films made.

Hullo Atuldom

“This is a multi-birthday post.

First and foremost we shall be wishing our Sudhirji- The Dillwala Dilliwala; Atulji’s trusted lieutenant on his birthday. He has been a huge help to Atulji and that has ensured that the blog has had no dot days since 25th December 2019. Let us all wish this Atulite with lots of fun and music.”

This was the opening line of my post of the 2nd December 2022. For sometime now, the rate at which Sudhirji’s posts are appearing is less than a trickle. Hope he picks up the threads of all the series that he has made us addicted to. “Ram Jaane” when he will pick up steam.

Hope you have a Great Day Sudhirji-
Happy Birthday To You🌯🍫🍦🎂🕺💃
