The movie Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) is one of the classic movies of the great producer director Guru Dutt. This is a remarkable watershed movie, about the business of making movies. Guru Dutt plays the role of a director in the film world. The storyline is a very poignant and touching portrayal of his life as he passes through the phases of success and failure, both in the personal and professional domains. In many ways, this movie is an autobiographical essay by Guru Dutt about his own life and its tribulations, down to his supposed attraction for Waheeda Rehman, and how it disturbed his personal family life with Geeta Dutt.

This is a gem of a song from the movie Apna Haath Jaganaath. This is a 1960 film with Kishore Kumar and Saeeda Khan in lead roles. The movie was very topical for the time it was created. With a large number of educated youth coming into their own in the society, the issues of employment opportunities were as crucial at those times as they are now, only that such issues were just beginning to get the attention of the mainstream society. The movie is about the difficulties faced by educated young men to establish themselves in jobs or in vocational professions. The movie had a message about the dignity of labor, as well as an examination of the government policies (see the song ‘permit permit’ from this movie; already posted on this blog) that were beginning to breed corruption in the society.

This is such a beautiful gem of a song, that I heard for the first time today. The movie is Pehli Nazar (1945). Many will remember this as the debut movie for Mukesh, ‘Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De’. The lead characters of this movie are Motilal, Veena, Nigar Sultana, Cuckoo, Bibbo, B Pendarkar etc. The lyrics are created by Dr. Safdar Aah Sitapuri, and the music compositions are by Anil Biswas. The singer is Naseem Akhtar.

Mehboob Khan is famous as one of the key pioneers and one of the greatest film makers of Indian cinema. Born in 1907 in at Bilimoria in Gujarat, he ran away from home at a very young age with dreams of making in big in the film industry of Bombay. He started out as a junior artist (extra) during the silent films era, making a debut as one of forty thieves in the 1927 silent version of ‘Alibaba and Forty Thieves’, produced by the Imperial Film Company of Ardeshir Irani. He caught the attention of Ardeshir Irani who made him an assistant director in his company. Later he moved to Sagar Movietone company, and appeared in bit roles in some of their movies. In 1935 he went on to independently direct his first film, ‘Judgment of Allah’ produced by Sagar Movietone. The movie was a great success in its time. His cameraman for this movie was Faredoon Irani, with whom Mehboob struck a lasting friendship. Faredoon was to capture in camera, almost all the films produced and directed by Mehboob.

Chhoti Chhoti Baatein (1965) is the last movie of the great actor Motilal. Motilal had been active in the Hindi film world for more than 3 decades by then. This was his first (and also the last) venture as a director and producer. Unfortunately, Motilal passed away before the release date of the movie, and in more than one ways, this movie turns out to be his swansong.

A wonderful gem of a duet from Hamdard (1953). This is such a wonderful classical jugalbandi, such a pleasure to listen with your eyes closed. It is almost a divine composition, a signature composition by Anil Da, with more than one raga blended seamlessly into a single flow. A virtuous melody, and a pleasure to listen to.

I have seen the movie Sautela Bhai (1962) many years ago on Doordarshan, and have remembered it for a very strong performance by Guru Dutt. It is a family drama, based on the story of two step brothers. Guru Dutt, the elder, is a responsible and values oriented person. The younger one is an irresponsible weakling, who has a bevy of crooked friends around him. The storyline moves on a very predictable track, with a happy ending.

Minerva Movietone is the renowned flagship company that was launched and nurtured by the great Sohrab Modi. He has given such powerful historical epics to the Indian cinema as Pukar, Sikandar, Prithvi Vallabh, Jhansi Ki Rani, and many other great creations like Mirza Ghalib, Nausehrvan-e-Adil, Kundan, Jailor and Raaj Hatth.
