Today’s song is from a re-made costume film from the South – Nishan-1949.

Besides being a Musical films’ year, 1949 was also an year when the South Indian filmmakers, especially S.S.Vasan, became active after the film Chandralekha-1948 became a successful one and brought in huge profits. It became an attraction for the filmmakers in the South. They understood that the Hindi film market was many times bigger than the Southern film market and that it was possible to capture a part of it with their south made Hindi films.

Initially, in the early era, Bombay was the biggest centre for film making. When the Talkie films started, other smaller centres in those times, like Lahore and the South, woke up. For Lahore, language was not a problem and so there was a traffic between Lahore and Bombay film people for work and technology. Thus few centres for film production prospered in Lahore-like Pancholi and Shorey etc.

Today’s song is from the film Shri Ram Avtar-1950.

Hindu religion has a very large literature. Unlike Islamic or Christian religions, Hindus do not have One Common Sacred ” GOD-BOOK”. That is because all the knowledge of Hindu religion can not be summed up in one book, however big it would be. Further Hindu religion is not rigid and gives freedom of worship to its followers as it suits them.

Today’s song is a DayDream song video from the film Brandy ki Botal-1939.

The period of early Talkie cinema was interesting in many ways from the point of view of Cinema history. The experimental attitude of the filmmakers allowed the audience to enjoy a variety of subjects of life. Not only this, but due to studios like Prabhat, Huns, Maharashtra Film co. etc making bilingual films in Hindi and Marathi, gave a taste of Marathi style of acting and pronunciation of the dialogues. Exposure to Marathi actors, who acted only in Marathi films, had a typical accent, diction and style of delivering the dialogues which , at times, sounded funny and odd. The Hindi language that was used in these Bilingual films from Maharashtra was sprinkled with ” Hindi-ised” Marathi words, which, though not completely wrong, were rarely used in day-to-day use in the Hindi Belt. One example would be ” मैं तुम्हारी बाट ( वाट in Marathi) देखूंगी “…. which simply meant ” I will wait for you ” !

That date ten years ago happened to be Ramnavami. On that occasion, a couple of Lord Ram related songs were covered from Lord Ram related movies. First movie was “Bharat Milaap” (1942) and second movie was “Jai Hanuman”(1948).

“Bharat Milaap” (1942) has already been taken up under BTYC earlier today. That leaves us with “Jai Hanuman”(1948) as the next Lord Ram related movie.
