Today’s song is from a mysterious film – But Tarash-1947.
When I first heard this film’s name, for a very long time, I was puzzled about its meaning. First I thought ‘ But’ is written by mistake for ‘Boot’. But Then what was Tarash ?
Was it also by mistake, for ‘Trash’ ? No, it could not be !
Very wisely, I referred to my dictionary of ” Urdu into English and vice versa”. Conveniently, it lists Urdu words in Roman script, so one who can not read Urdu, can also use this dictionary easily. This dictionary is compiled by The Rev. T.Cravel,M.A. and it was published in 1889 from Lucknow. This book is one of my prized possessions and I got this from my father 70 years ago. This 136 year old book has to be handled very carefully as its pages have become yellowish brown and very sensitive for breakages. The dictionary meaning of ” But Tarash” is ‘One who sculpts an idol’. In Hindi we call it a ‘Shilpkar’ or a ‘ Moortikar’.

Today (9 August 2025) is Rakshabandhan. Incidentally, Rakshabandhan was the first festival for this blog when this blog began on 19 July 2008. On that year, Rakshabandhan was on 16 August 2008, one day after Independence day. Chosing an appropriate song for the occasion was a no brainer for me. I had covered the iconic Rakshabandhan song, bhaiyya mere raakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana. That post turned out to be a “game changer” for the blog as the blog received visitors in three digits on that day for the first time. That was a breakthrough for the blog as it began to get noticed by more and more music lovers.
We have been covering rakshabandhan related songs on all Rakshabandhan days. There have been 17 such occasions on the blog so far. All the well known rakshabandhan songs have already been covered by now. 26 Rakshabandhan related songs have been covered on these 17 occasions.
Today, on the occasion of the 18th Rakshabandhan day (9 August 2025) for the blog, here is a lesser known Raksha bandhan song. This song is from “Pyaar Ka Rishtaa”(1973).

Hullo Atuldom
It is 13 years since the passing of the first Superstar of Hindi cinema. I shall hold back the adjectives that are normally showered on this ICON who had a way to charm the audiences. His smile, emoting eyes etc. had the film viewing public, specially the female viewers swooning all over him, his images and even his CARS. A kind of mania no other actor has managed to replicate since then. He walked into their hearts riding an open top jeep, singing a song composed by S.D. Burman, in the voice of Kishore Kumar. Though that was not his first foray into films.
Let me first clarify that we are remembeing actor/producer Rajesh Khanna who veered towards politics (he contested the 1991/1992 Lok Sabha elections & won the ’92 Bye-election) briefly.
He was a winner of the 1965 All India Talent Contest, organised by United Producers and Filmfare magazine. Actors turned filmmakers Subhash Ghai & Dheeraj Kumar were also contestants in that year.

Today’s song is from the Mythological film Navdurga-1953.
!953 was a year Music ruled the films. Various genres were tried by filmmakers to attract the audience. After the Partition, the new blood flowing in all sections of filmmaking was trying new ideas and experiments. However, in all these changes, one genre still ruled the audience and that was the Religious films. Besides the “Golden Era of Film Music”, the 50’s were also the decade for the religious films. From 1951 to 1960, for a period of 10 full years, as many as 124 Mythological films were made, averaging one new religious film every month for 10 continuous years.
Navdurga-1953 is a story of Navratri and the power of Maa Shakti in 9 different forms. Navratri, literally a celebration of nine nights, is a festival that actually occurs once in every quarter, i.e. four times a year. Of these, the celebration that occurs in the month of Chaitra and the month of Ashwin are the better known and more popular Navratri celebrations. The Chaitra navratri ends with the celebration of Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram. The Ashwin Navratri is followed on the next day by Dushehra, the celebration of the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the King of Lanka. Besides these two, the navratri celebrations also occur in the months of Aashaad and Paush / Maagh. These are also called the Gupt Navratri, or the lesser known or secret Navratri.
