“Namoona” (1949) is a movie that had Kishore Sahu, Kamini Kaushal, Dev Anand and Leela Chitnis in lead roles. In this movie, Kamini Kaushal’s father fixes her wedding with Kishore Sahu, though she is in love with Dev Anand. And as is the case in Hindi movies, he resorts to emotional blackmail to get her to marry the person of his choice. Dev Anand, who overhears their conversation, also concurs with the old man and advises Kamini Kaushal that they needed to sacrifice their love for the sake of practical considerations.

The fact is, they take stories that seem plausible enough and then add their own fancy unrealistic stuff. And since audiences tend to lap it up, they continue to churn out such movies till the taste of public changes. And this public taste does change with time.

There may be more Hindi movies called “Laila Majnu” than one can count, but the two main movies of this title that I can readily recall are the ones that came in 1953 and 1976. The 1953 movie had Nutan and Shammi Kapoor playing the legendary lovers while the same roles wre enacted by Ranjeeta and Shammi Kapoor’s nephew Rishi Kapoor , respectively.
