This day ten years ago (viz 22 september 2020) was another normal day for the blog, when six songs from six different movies were discussed. First post of the day appeared at 7:29 AM and the final post at 9:12 AM.

Today, 18th July, is the fourth remembrance day of the renowned singer, Mubarak Begum. In 2016, she had passed away in Bombay, at the age of 80, after a protracted illness.

A very unique voice that stands apart from all her contemporary singers, her repertoire of songs rendered reads like a list of favorites all the way through. Our dear friend Girdharilal ji of Jodhpur has painstakingly compiled a near exhaustive list of her songs in films. This includes songs in Hindi films, unreleased films, regional language films and also three films from Pakistan. The total number of films across all categories for which she has sung, is close to 135, and the total number of songs is close to 215. There is also a very small number of known non-film songs also that she has rendered.

Today’s song is from a C grade Costume film of the 50s, Aan Baan-56. It was made by D D Kashyap, under his own banner, Kashyap Productions, Bombay. Needless to mention that the film was directed by himself. Music was by Husnlal-Bhagatram, with assistance from krishan Chander. The cast of the film was Ajit, Mahipal, Nalini Jaywant, Usha Kiran, Pran, Ulhas, Manmohan Krishna and many others.

On Saturday, 16th May morning, I got a call on my Mobile. I picked it up and saw that it was flashing name of Bharatbhai and his photo. A little surprised to get his call at early morning hours, I took the call and as usual said,” Good Morning Bharat ji. Aaj subah subah yaad kiya ?” There was a pause and an unfamiliar voice said, ” Main Bharat ji ka beta baat kar raha hoon.” I knew he was ill. My mind suddenly became alert. For next 5 minutes his son was giving me details of his illness and finally he ended with those dreaded words, ” last Friday,8th May ko raat mein 1230 baje Bharatbhai ki death ho gayi “.

I was stunned. I gave my condolences to the bereaved family and kept the phone. I sat still for five minutes. Then I saw a missed call from Sadanand ji. I gave him a call. He too had got the news. We shared our thoughts and it was decided that Sadanand ji will announce this news on our WA group.

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 6

A couple of months’ back, I had come across a Hindi song ‘ruke ruke se kadam’ from a Bangla film, ‘Laal Pathore’ (1964) sung by Mubarak Begum under the music direction of Salil Chowdhury. I could not locate the picturised version of the song. The tune of the song gives me an impression that it is picturised as a mujra song. While it was a new song for me, the ‘mukhda’ of the song sounded familiar to me. Oh! Yes. It was the more famous song, ruke ruke se kadam from ‘Mausam’ (1975) sung by Lata Mangeshkar under the music direction of Madan Mohan. Both the songs have almost the same lyrics which are accredited to Gulzar. So, it is one song, composed in two tunes by two different music directors, depicting two different emotions.

Missing Films of 1960s – 113

Famous last words, and all the associated idiomatic paraphernalia that goes along – well, it has happened with me too. 🙂 On Monday last (1st July), while posting the 112th episode of this series, I had, with much fanfare announced that no more films of 1960s are traceable at present. And the very same day, our dear Sadanand ji pointed me towards a link on YT – a song uploaded by Shri Girdhari Lal ji (of Jodhpur), from the film ‘Rang Raliyaan’ of 1962. This film is on the list of 79 films that I posted in that article – list of films that are still to be traced.

If I start listing favorites, then it will take a long time to get to the matter of the subject. Ah yes, the songs listed above clearly point to the artist this article is about. The songs listed are iconic as well as popular hits. When she recorded “Kabhi Tanhaai’on Mein. . .”, and her father listened to it for the first time, his prophetic reaction was that this song is going to remain in popular memory for generations. And these words are so true for so many of her other songs, if the above sampler is anything to go by. Going beyond the barriers of time and space, her songs continue to enchant and touch listeners and lovers of this music, across the world.
